రిషి తి কলিকাতা সেকালের ও একালের । চিঠির-বহি ব্যবহৃত হইত। সে বহিখানি ঘটনাচক্রে নষ্ট হইয়া ক্ষিত্রে জব চাৰ্লকের কলিকাতা প্রতিষ্ঠার দুই বৎসর পূর্বে ও পরে “স্বতামূh ডায়ারি" (১৬৮৮) ও "সুতানুটী কন্সলটেসনস বা মন্ত্রণাসভার বহি (১৯.) এখনও বিলাতে মুরক্ষিত। উল্লিখিত কারণ সমূহের মধ্যে যে কোন কারণেই হউক না কেন—সেই সময়ে—কলিকাতা প্রভৃতি গ্রাম, স্বতাটা বলিয়াই সাধারণ সংজ্ঞায় পরিচিত ছিল । * যাহাই হউক না কেন—সাবর্ণ মহাশয়েরা, সেই পুরাকালে কলি, কাতার জন-সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি ও আংশিক উন্নতিকল্পে যথেষ্ট সহায়তা । করিয়াছিলেন। তাহাদের তামরায়জীউর উৎসব উপলক্ষে, সাময়িক অনেক হাট-বাজার ও মেলার অনুষ্ঠান হইত। তাছাদের হামরায় বিগ্রহের দোল-যাত্রা উপলক্ষে, তৎকালের উপযোগী, একটা জকালে মেলা লালদীঘিতে বসিত । এই শ্যামরায়ের দোলের উৎসবক্ষেত্র ছিল বলিয়াই বোধ হয় পার্শ্বী স্থানগুলির লালদীঘি, রাধাবাজার, লালবাজার ইত্যাদি নামকরণ হইয়াছিল। হাটতলা ও তদপভ্রংশ হাটখোলা, "বড়বাজার (বুড়াবাজার - বুড়ো শিবের বাজার ) ইত্যাদি অাখ্যা ও এই ভাবে উৎপন্ন হইয়াছে। এই প্রাচীনকালের যখন কোন ধারাবাহিক ইতিকথা নাই, তখন চলিত কিম্বদন্তী সমূহের উপরই বিশ্বাস স্থাপন করিতে হইবে । । জব চার্ণক—মজুমদারদের এই পাকা কাছাড়ি-বাড়ীটি, কোম্পানীর
