PRESS OPINIONS

“BIRUPA BAJRA” is the title of a portfolio of cartoons by Gaganedranath Tagore which are really a merciless satire, not altogether undeserved, on some of the modern tendencies of the artist's countrymen. The first is called “Hybrid Bengalensis” and represents a youth clad partly in Indian and partly in European dress. The sartorial affectations of his countrymen are evidently a sore point with the artist. Whilst Patrika would dress all Europeans in dhotis Mr. Tagore has no intention of retaliating ly drawing all Bengalis in trousers. And if some of the specimens given in his caroons are typical—and we regret to say that outlandishness is not uncommon in the Indian’s adoption of European apparel—we do not blame him. “The cramming machine” is a hard knock at the University system and the Auto-speechola is a suggestion which members of Legislative Councils might take to heart.
—The Eaglishman, Friday, August, 17, 1917.
Mr. Gaganendranath Tagore has certainly broken new grounds is Indian pictorial Art by publishing these satarical sketches. A glance at these cartoons will shew that Mr. Tagore is not a wearer of cap and bell—not an irresponsible humorist only concerned to play with our weaknesses with the sole purpose of raising a smile— nor indeed a friendly optimist content to make fun of our faults and shortcomings. He is a serious critic of the many sins of presentday Bengalee life—keenly alive to the pity of things—one whose heart is wrung with sorrow at the heartrending cruelties, the tyrannies and blind vagaries of some phases of Bengalee life. What he has felt is certainly too deep for tears and the humorous verbiage he has chosen vainly covers be shrieks of his heart. And we have no doubt that these drawings will move many, as they are intended to do, to a feeling which is the opposite of mirth.
