ঘটকালি।

 ঘটক মহাশয় আমার বড় পুত্রতির বিবাহ দিব আপনি একটি সুমানুষের কন্যা স্থির করিয়া আনুন বিস্তর দিবস গৌণ না হয় বৈশাখে কিম্বা আষাঢ়ে হইতে চাহে। আমি বিবাহ দিয়া কার্য্য স্থলে যাব এখন না হইলে যে খরচপত্র আনিয়াছি সে ফুরিয়া যাবে।

AN AGREEMENT OF MARRIAGE.

 Mr. Ghutuka^[১], I want to marry my eldest son. Do you fix upon, and bring a young woman of respectable parentage. Let there not be much delay; I wish the wedding to be in Vishakh or Asharh. When the marriage is over, I shall go to my business. If it is not done now, I shall expend all the money I have brought.

 ঘটক কহিলেন। ভাল মহাশয় তাহার ঠেক কি। আপনকার পূত্রের সম্বন্ধ নিমিত্ত আমাকেও অনেকেই কহিয়াছে। আমি আপনকার অপেক্ষায় আছি। দুই তিন জাগায় কন্যা উপস্থিত আছে যেখানে বলেন সেইখানে স্থির করিয়া আসি। কুলীন গ্রামে হরহরি বসুর একটি কন্যা আছে সিটি উপযুক্তা। যেমন নাক মুখ চক্ষু তেমনি বর্ণ যেন দুদে আলতায় গোলা, আর কর্ম্মাও তেমনি। যদি বলেন তবে তাহার কাছে যাই।

 তিনি বলিলেন। ভাল। তাহারি কন্যার সহিত কর্ত্তব্য বটে তুমি যাও। দিবস ধার্য্য করিয়া আইস আর কত পণ লাগিবে তাহ জানিয়া আইলে পত্রাদি করিয়া সামগ্রীর আয়োজন করা যায়।

 ঘটক যাইয়া হরহরি বসুকে বলিতেছেন বসুজা মহাশয়হে তোমার কন্যার সম্বন্ধ অমুক গ্রামে গৌরহরি ঘোষের পুত্রের সহিত কর্ত্তব্য তাহারণ জাত্যাংশেও যেমন আর অন্নযোগ স্বচ্ছন্দ আছে সে ব্যক্তি নিজে বরেহাঁ চাকুরা। পুত্রতি অতি সুজন লিখিতে পড়িতে মুর্ত্তিমন্ত দৃশ্য ভব্য সভ্য অল্প বয়স এমন পাত্র আর পাবা না ইহা বুঝিয়া জবাব দেহ কিন্তু তাহারা দেরি সহিবে না এই মাসের মধ্যে কর্ম্ম করিতে হবে।

 আমার এ কার্য্য অবশ্য করা বটে কিন্তু এ মাসের মধ্যে কার্য্য নির্ব্বাহ হয় না যদি অগ্রহায়নাসিতে করেন তবে আমি পারি নতুবা হয় না।

 শুনহে বসুজা এমন বর আর মিলিবে না তুমি যদি কর এযন হয় তবে আমি কিছু পণ দিয়া দিতে পারি তাহা বল আমি তাহারদিগকে জানিয়া পত্র করিয়া যাই।

 ভাল।  যাও আন যাইয়া এই মাসের দশঞি এক দিন আছে তোমরা পরসু তাকাতি আইস।

 বরকর্ত্তারা আসিয়া বসিলেন পত্রাদি লেখা পড়া হইলে হইলে কন্যাকর্ত্তাত বাগ্দান করিলেন।

 The Ghutuka answered, Very well, Sir, what difficulty is there in that? Several people have spoken to me about your son's marriage. I am at your command. There are young ladies at two or three places. Wherever you tell me, I will go and make the match. At Kooleen-Gram is the daughter of Hur Hari Bosoo. She is just proper: as are her nose, face, and eyes, so also is her colour like alta [lac] dissolved in milk. Her conduct also is of a piece with her person. If you speak I will go to him.

 He said, Well, it will be a proper match indeed with his daughter. Go. Come back as soon as you have fixed the day; and when you have ascertained what dowry will be required come, and we will execute the writings; after which the proper articles shall be prepared.

 The Ghutuka went to Hur-Hari-Bosoo, and said, Bosoo, it will be a very proper thing, Sir, to marry your daughter to Gowr-Huri-Ghosa's son, of ——. They are of a good cast, and in easy circumstances, and he is fit to fill a high office as a servant. His son is a very good lad; knows how to write and read: he is well made, looks well, dresses well, and is young. You will not get such another match. Think on this, and give a reply; but they won't allow of delay; they want the wedding to be celebrated this month.

 This will certainly be proper for me; but I cannot get ready this month. If any time after Agrahyon will do, I shall be able, otherwise not.

 Hear me, Bosoo, you will never get such another match. If you accept it, I can get a little dowry for you. Speak, and I will bring them, and strike the bargain.

 Well, go and fetch them. The tenth of this month is a proper day. Do you come by the day after to-morrow.

 The father of the bridegroom being come, sat down, and when the articles were drawn up, the father of the young lady betrothed her thus:—

 তোমরা সকলে শুন ইহার পুত্রের সহিত আমার কন্যার সম্বন্ধ নির্ণয় হইল যদি প্রজাপতির নির্ব্বন্ধ থাকে দশঞি রোজ দেড় প্রহর রাত্রির পর বিবাহ হবেক।

 বরকর্ত্তাও বলিলেন। তোমরা শুন ইহার কন্যার সহিত আমার পুত্রের সম্বন্ধ হইল যদি বিধাতার নির্ব্বন্ধ থাকে তবে হবে উনিও সামগ্রী আয়োজন করুনগা আমিও করিগা।

 Do you all attend. My daughter is betrothed to this person's son. If it be the decree of Prujaputi, the wedding ceremony will be performed at half past ten at night, on the tenth instant.  The young man's father also said, Do you attend. My son is betrothed to this man's daughter. If it be the decree of Vidhata, the marriage will take place. Let him get things ready, and I will do the same.

1. There is a set of men in Bengal, whose business it is to settle marriages, or to act as agents between the parents of the parties. They are generally paid four or five rupees by each of the contracting parties. These people are called ghutukas.
