8a. ANATHBANDHU. Evolume 1, QaMNamlu~magM7 attain peace, health and happiness. We have purposes, but look up to their rich neighbours , the where withals of peace and happiness near for help. If the rich leave them they become at hand and need not roam all over the world helpless. Almost all old houses had their for them. Let us, therefore, revive the old conditions. The paths and rail-roads that block the waterways and so make the land water-logged should be so constructed as to allow the water courses to follow their natural course without detriment to public health and interest. Old tanks should be re-excavated, wells dug, jute-steeping in ' rivers restricted. Thus will public health be improved, and the gradual deterioration of the urban population and the desertion of villages will cease. To meet the demands of the rural population small industries should be revived by hereditary handicraftsmen and the poverty problem of the country solved without much difficulty. The rich people will then have no excuse to leave their villages and come to the towns to lead fast lives which often bring about their ruin. Once they leave their villages and are out of the reach of their old Samaj with its duties and obligations their views change and gradually the natural ties to their old homestead and society wane, the whole community i suffer in consequence. The poor cannot contribute money for sanitary or educational Thakurbareed and Atithaalas where a host of people got shelter and food. Thus was the need of workhouses and almshouses avoided in India. These charitable institutions could be maintained because people were frugal and lived economically. That old ideal should be resorted to. The prevailing system of education too is contributing to our poverty and bringing about discontent and unrest. The food that we get is mostly adulterated, insufficient and the price is exorbitant. The cattle is deteriorating and their prices are going up. Such unnatural conditions cannot but spell ruin for us. The struggle for existance has become so keen during the past fifty years that we shudder to think what is in store for us in the near future. Our mode of living is becoming more and more expensive every day, our system of education is making us discontented and disrespectful, and our health is becoming undemined. This is a serious state of affairs which cry aloud for redress. Let us then go back to the old ideals and once more live in HEALTH and PEACE.
