' ኵት ! ነ , " , " " ' ' ', ' , . . . . . . . k where a mere scholar would have found it difficult t0 I." tie with him in the abilility to envisage crises and transitions issour national life and to portray them in a clear, forceful and eonvincing style. Dr. Sen writing this monumental history after retirement from service retains the freshness of outlook, the sensitiveness and vigour of perceptions, which one generally associates with youth. In a book that has been planned on such a vast scale as Dr. Sen's 'Brihat Vanga', giving such infinite details of our national history it is but natural to come across tlueories or conclusions on which there are likely. to be differences of opinion among scholars. The reviewer himself has some times found himself in disagreement with the author but this is not the place to enumerate controversial topics. The only suggestill that he may be permitted to offer here is that the inclusion of some good maps in a future edition of the book would be greatly appreciated. On the foundations which Dr. Sen has laid, further systematic studies of Bengal's ethnology and jurisprudence would be considerably facilitated. It was not for men of the cold intellectual type to have produced the kind of history whieh the present author has done. The extraordinary degree of sympathy which be possesses in addition to wide reading and erudition has given him an insiglit and understanding with which vey few of our scholars are endowed, The value of such a work assuredly does not depend on what opinion others may enteraiti about this or that point of history, agreeing with of differing from the author, nor is its importance diminished by the fact of some slight mistakes having probably crept into it. The wUrk as a whole will be judged stupendous and magnificent ; there are ہی؟ for example, those dealing with universities of Nalanda, Odantapuri, Mithila and Navadwip, with again chapters in it,
