ধৰ্ম্মনাশে সিপাহী-বিদ্রোহ । ORÐ আমরা যতদূর জানিতে পারি, তাহাতে যে কারণে এই ভারাবহ বিদ্রোহ সহসা প্ৰজ্বলিত ভাইয়া উঠে, টোটাকাটাই তাতার প্রকাশ্য কারণ | পুৰ্ব্ব হইতে সে অশান্তির অগ্নি জনসাধারণের সহিত সিপাহীগণ হৃদয়ে পোষণ করিতেছিল, তাতাতে টোটাকাটার সংঘর্ষ উপস্থিত হু ওয়ায় এই অগ্নি প্ৰজলিত হইয়া উঠে । সুতরাং প্রকাশ্যভাবে টােটাকাটাই এই অধির কারণ হইয়া উঠিয়াছিল। কিন্তু ইহার গুপ্ত কারণ যে, অনেক ছিল তাহা অস্বীকার করার উপায় নাই । ধৰ্ম্মনাশের যে আশঙ্কা লইয়। এই বিদ্রোহের সূচনা হয়, প্ৰকাশ্যভাবে টোটাকাটাই তাহার কারণ দৃষ্ট হইয়া থাকে। তাহার অন্যান্য কারণ থাকিলেও তাহা আজিও প্ৰকাশিত হয় নাইট । এই সম্বন্ধে যে সমস্ত সরকারী কাগজপত্ৰ প্ৰকাশিত হইয়াছে তাহা হইতে জানা যায় যে, দমদমার একজন খালাসী জনৈক সিপাহীর নিকট জলপানার্থে তাহার লোটা প্রার্থনা করায় সিপাহী সে কি জাতি । না জানাতে তাহাকে লোটা দিতে অস্বীকাব করে । তাহার পর খালাসী উত্তর করে যে, শীঘ্রই তোমাদের জাতি যাইবে । কারণ, গবা ও শোেকর চব্বিমিশ্রিত টোটা তোমাদিগকে কাটিতে হইবে } }; ইহার পর হইতে সিপাহীরা জানিতে 万

" I have the honour to report for the information of Major Bontein, Commanding the IDepot, that there appears to be a very unpleasant eeling existing among the native soldiers who are here for instruction, regarding the grease used in preparing the cartridges, some evil disposed persons having spread a report that it consists of a mixture of the fat of pigs and cows. 2. The belief in this report has been strengthened by the behaviour of a Khalast attached to the magazine, who I am told, asked a Sepoy of the second regiment Native (Grenadier) Infantry, to supply him, with water from his lota ; the Sepoy refused, observing he was not aware of what caste the man was. Ahalasi immediately rejoined-'you will Soon lose your caste, as ere long you will have to bite, cartridges covered with the fat of pigs and cows'-or words to that effect. f
