Whereas Deputy Magistrates appointed under Act XV. of 1843 to exercise the powers of a Covenanted Assistant under Regulations XIII. 1797, XII. 1803, IX. 1807, or III. 1821, are not competent to decide any cases but such as are referred to them by the Magistrate, and whereas this restriction is attended with practical inconvenience to complainants in petty criminal cases: I. It is hereby enacted, that it shall be competent to the Local Government of both I)ivisions of the Bengal Presidency, to empower Deputy Magistrates appointed under Act XV. 1843 to receive and try such charges as they are now competent to try upon reference by the Magistrate, subject to an appeal from their decisions to the Magistrate, provided such appeal be preferred within the period of one month from the date of the sentence or order appealed from.
