to the place of meeting. This being done, on the motion of Mr. Justice Chaudhuri, seconded by Mr. Bhupendra Nath Basu, Dr. J. C. Bose was voted to the chair. The poet was then garlanded amidst applause, after which Dr. Bose addresed a few words congratulating him on his own behalf and on behalf of the deputation. Next Babu Hirendra Nath Dutt read a short Bengali address which was printed on silk and presented it to Mr. Tagore. Mr. Melburn The Rev. Mr. Melburn recognised it as a great privilege to be allowed to say a few words on behalf of the European and Christian community and to offer a small handful of respect and congratulation to Mr. Tagore who had enriched not only the literature of his own country but the literature of England. In this connection the speaker mentioned that some of the passages of Mr. Tagore's book the “Gitanjali, were being used by Christian students in offering their prayers. Dr. Satish Chundra Vidyachushan on behalf of the Bengal Sahitya Parishad and also on behalf of the Pan dits of Bengal offered congratulations to Mr. Tagore in Sanskrit.
