the tension was relaxed. He would not confront me with that man but he assured me that he believed me. It took some time before he returned to normal. Any other man in similar circumstances would have dealt with me differently. But here the heart was sound and though at times it got warped, it was not dead and never damaged. After all he was a man and what man is there without his failings. But in spite of his failings of this nature, which bore the guinea stamp of truly greatman's failings,.... never led him to do a wrong to his fellow-man. His nature was supremely adorable and I, for one, small and insignificant as I am, have ventured to nurse the memory of my association with him as the greatest gift and noblest asset of my life.
