মধুসূদন-গ্রন্থাবলী

handwriting I will preserve it with the greatest care in my Library, as a Monument that marks a grand epoch in our literature, when Bengali poetry first broke thro' the fetters of rhyme and soared exultingly into the lofty region of sublimity which is her genuine province. Time will come when the poem will meet with due appreciation, and will find that high place in the estimation of posterity it so richly deserves. I feel sure that my descendants (should I have any) will then be proud to think that the manuscript in the author's autograph of the first blank verse Epic in the language, is in their possession, and they will honour their ancestor the more, that he was fortunate enough to be considered worthy of such an invaluable present by the poet himself.—পৃ. ২৬৩-৬৪।

 ৪। রাজনারায়ণ বসু রাজেন্দ্রলাল মিত্রকে[]

If Indra had spoken Bengali he would have spoken in the style of the poem. The author's extraordinary loftiness and brilliancy of imagination, his minute observation of nature, his delicate sense of beauty, the uncommon splendour of his diction, and the rich music of his versification, charm us in every page. It is an intellectual treat of the first description; compared to it what are “Lucent syrups tinet with cinnamon?”—পৃ. ২৯৩।

 ৫।. রাজেন্দ্রলাল মিত্র রাজনারায়ণ বসুকে—

Your opinion of Madhu’s poem is entirely my own, and Jatindra Mohan Tagore, a man of well cultivated taste, and an excellent judge of poetry, whom perhaps you know conours with me. It is the first and a most successful attempt to break through the jingling monotony of the পয়ার, and as a poem the best we have in the language. The ideas are no doubt borrowed, and Keats and Shelly and Kalidas and Milton have been largely, very largely, put in requisition; but as you very justly say, “whatever passes through the crucible of the author’s mind receives an original shape,” so the reader has no opportunity to Dotice, much less to find fault with, the mosaic character of the materials which go to the making up of Tilottama. The author can never expect a wide cirole of readers, but then he must console himself by the reflection that Milton is not the most popular author in English.
