As old Runjit Sing used to say, when looking at the map of India,—"Sub lal ho jaga” I say “Sub Blank verse ho jaga.” I had a long talk with Rungo Lal, last evening, on the subject of versification in general and Blank verse in particular: he said “I acknowledge Blank verse to be the noblest measure in the language, but I say that no one but men accustomed to read the Poetry of England would appreciate it for years to come. I grinned and said “N’importe.” I did not care a cowry when it became popular, provided I knew that some day or other, it would become popular.
So many fellows have, of late, been at me to explain to them the structure of the new verse that I have been obliged to think of the subject and the result is that I find that the যতি instead of being confined to the 8th syllable, naturally comes in after the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th & 12th Examples:—
"জয় জয় অমরারি ধার ভূজবলে
পরাজিত আদিতেয় দ্বিতিসুতরিপু,
বজ্রী!”—তিলো—৪।
"চল রঙ্গে মোর সঙ্গে নির্ভয়-হৃদয়ে
অনঙ্গ।”— মেঘ-২।
“কেহ কহে দুরন্ত কৃতাস্তে গদা মারি
খেদাইনু।”—তিলো ৪।
“আইলেন বক্ষেশ্বরী, মুরজা সুন্দরী

You will be pleased to hear that the Pundits are coming round regarding Tilottoma. The renowned Vidyasagar has at last condescended to see “Great merit” in it, and the Someprokash has spoken out in a favourable manner. The book is growing popular. I don’t know if you read the Education Gazette. If you do, you have no doubt seen the Editor’s remarks on blank verse, I do not think R.—either reads or can appreciate Milton otherwise he would not have made those remarks in the concluding portion of his article. He reads
