করেন। শিরাক্যুসের নূতন রাজা গিলো ঐ নগর বেষ্টনের সম্বাদ শ্রবণমাত্রই পঞ্চাশ হাজার পদাতিক ও পাঁচ হাজার অশ্বারূঢ় লইয়া অতিবেগে নগর উদ্ধারার্থ গমন করেন। পথিমধ্যে সেলিনস নগরহইতে কার্থাজীয়েরদের শিবিরে গমনশীল এক দূতকে ধরিয়া তাহার পত্র দৃষ্টি করণপূর্ব্বক অবগত হইলেন যে কোন এক নির্দিষ্ট দিবসে ঐ নগরহইতে কএক সহকারি অশ্বারূঢ় হিমিল্কোর নিকটে প্রেরিত হইবে। অতএব ঐ নির্দিষ্ট দিবসে গিলাে আপনার এক দল অশ্বারূঢ় প্রস্তুত করিয়া কার্থাজের ছাউনিতে প্রেরণ করেন এবং বিপক্ষেরা তাহাতে কিছু ছল জ্ঞান না করিয়া তাহারদিগকে মিত্র বােধে গ্রহণ করিলেন। পরে সিরাক্যুসের ঐ সৈন্যেরা তৎক্ষণাৎ হিমিল্কোর প্রতি ধাবমান হইয়া তাঁহাকে বিনষ্ট করিয়া তাবৎ জাহাজ দগ্ধ করিল। এই শঙ্কা সময়ে গিলো আপনি স্বীয় তাবৎ সৈন্য লইয়া কার্থাজীয়েরদের উপরে পড়িলেন প্রথমতঃ অতিসাহসে
their general, landing in Sicily, laid siege to Himera. Gelo, the new king of Syracuse, hearing of the siege, flew to the relief of the town with fifty thousand foot and five thousand horse. Having intercepted a courier proceeding from Selinus to the Carthaginian camp, he learned from his despatches that on a particular day a body of auxiliary horse would be sent from that town to Himilco. Gelo on the appointed day, drew out an equal number of his own cavalry and sent them to the camp of the enemy, who, suspecting no stratagem, received them as friends. The Syracusan troops instantly rushed on Himilco, whom they slew, and set fire to his ships. At this critical juncture, Gelo attacked the main body of the Carthaginians with his whole force.
