অক্ষরের উৎপত্তিবিষয়ক অনুমানের শেষ নাই। হিন্দুরা কহেন যে সিন্ধুনদীর পূর্ব্বে চীনীয় অক্ষরব্যতিরেকে তাবদক্ষরের মুল যে দেবনাগর অক্ষর তাহা দেবদত্ত। অতএব ঐ অক্ষরের অতি নিগূঢ়োউৎপত্তিবিষয়ে আমারদের স্পষ্ট করিয়া লিখনের সাধ্য কি। অতএব অনুসন্ধানের ফলের সৎসম্ভাবনার স্থান অর্থাৎ সিন্ধুনদীর পশ্চিমদিগ অবলোকন করিয়া এই নির্দ্ধারণ হয় যে নিমরোদের পরমায়ুর পর বিলষ বাবেলনে জ্যোতিঃশাস্ত্রের গণনা প্রথমারম্ভ করেন ঐ গণনা ক্রমে২ লিখিত হয় এবং তাহার অনেক শত বৎসর পরে সিকন্দর শাহ জয়ী হইয়া ঐ নগরে প্রবেশ করিলে তাঁহাকে ঐ লিখিত গণনা দর্শান যায়। অতএব অতিপ্রাচীনকালীন অক্ষরের এই প্রথম ব্যবহার দৃষ্টে অনুমান হয় যে অ

Respecting the origin of letters, there have been conjectures without end.
