ব্যর্থ হইল। যখন নগরের দুই প্রাচীর রোমানেরদের অধিকৃত হইল তখন নগরস্থেরা তৃতীয় প্রাচীর গাঁথিলেন এবং যখন এক বন্দর অপহৃত হইল তখন তাঁহারা অন্য বন্দর খনন করিলেন। পরিশেষে রোমান সেনাপতি সিপিয়ো কৌশলক্রমে ঐ নূতন বন্দরও আয়ত্ত করিলেন কিন্তু যদ্যপি তাহাতে শহর খােলা এবং উপায়হীন হইল তথাপি নগরস্থেরা ছয় দিবা রাত্রিপর্য্যন্ত অতিদৃঢ় প্রতিজ্ঞাপূর্ব্বক যুদ্ধ করিলেন। কিন্তু যখন আর যতন করা মিথ্যা বোধ হইল তখন তাঁহারা নগরের চতুর্দ্দিগে আগুন লাগাইয়া স্বীয় পূর্ব্ব পুরুষেরদের কবরের উপরে ও দুর্গের মধ্যে ও দেবালয়ে আপনারাই আত্মঘাতী হইলেন। ঐ অগ্নিতে সতর দিনপর্য্যন্ত নগর পুড়িল এবং ঐ অতি মহাগর্ব্বি যে নগরে পূর্ব্বে সাত লক্ষ লােকের বসতি ছিল অথচ যে নগর সহস্র বৎসর বিরাজমান এমত কার্থাজ নগর এককালে উচ্ছিন্ন হইল। কার্থাজীয়েরা আপনারদের দেশ রক্ষার্থ যে মহোদ্যোগ করিলেন তদপেক্ষা উৎকৃষ্ট
