অপর এতৎসময়ে রোমীয়েরদের সঙ্গে যুগর্থার যে যুদ্ধ ঘটিল তাহাতে রোমনগরস্থ প্রধান২ লােকেরদের উৎকোচ গ্রাহকতা স্বভাব সুব্যক্ত হইল। ঐ যুদ্ধ খ্রীষ্টীয়ান শকের ১১৮ বৎসর পূর্ব্বে এইরূপে আরম্ভ হয়। কার্থাজীয় যুদ্ধেতে মাসিনিসার রাজা রোমানেরদের যে সাহায্য করিয়াছিলেন তাহার পরিতোষিকস্বরূপ তাঁহাকে আফ্রিক। দেশান্তঃপাতি ন্যুমিডিয়া রাজ্য প্রদত্ত হইল। তাঁহার মরণোত্তর তাঁহার পুত্ত্র মিসিপ্সা সিংহাসনারােহী হইলেন। তাঁহার হিয়েমসাল ও আধরবাল নামক দুই পুত্ত্র ও যুগর্থানামক এক ভাতৃপুত্ত্র ছিল যুগর্থা অতিশয় চালাক ও নিপুণ অথচ কদাচারী। যুগর্থা মিসিপ্সার পুত্রদ্বয়কে পাছে সিংহাসন চ্যুত করেন এই ভয়ে ঐ রাজা ন্যুমান্সিয়া নগর বেষ্টনকারি রোমানেরদের সাহায্যার্থ স্বীয় সৈন্যগণ তাঁহার অধীন করিয়া তথায় প্রেরণ করিলেন। ঐ যুদ্ধে তিনি নিপুণ হইয়া রোমান সেনাপতিরদের প্রশংসা পাত্র হইলেন। এবং রোমানের ছাউনিতে
