(8) গাথা । This little book of poetical tales is a novelty in Bengali literature, and a novelty the clarms of ... which challenge onr sincore admiration. The poetry is the poetry of genuine heart-felt pathos— powerful from its sublimity and affecting from its tendemess. There is not a word orifiage if the Gathas to disturb the placid tenor of sacred tol ancholy that pervades it, nor an idea or conception to break our dream of soft communion with something holy and far removed from earth. Lest we should be deemed too rhetorical, we give below, a rather loose translation of a picture drawn by the writer of an unhappy girl—lost, in the reveries of her sorrow and pains # * * Perhaps it would be needless to inform the reading public that the writer of the Gatha under review is the noted writer of Dip Nirman, Hasanta Utsab, Malady, and Chinna Mulail. An honcst, historiam of Bengali literMturo will find himself puzzled in doing justice to a fair writer who commencing her literary career with the Dip Nirban at an early age, could surprise the literary public with 'gifts that would live as long as that literature lives.—Sunday Mirror, Septemper II, I881. -
