(10) I)ip Nirvan, as might have been expected called forth warm encomiums from literary critics and the Bengali reading public. It displyed such beautiful conception and skilful delineation of characters, such depth and purity of thought 'and such chasteness and eloquence of style, that the public was forced to the conclusion, that, the writer was possessed of high talents. The calcutta Reviewer felt no hesitation in prononucing Dip Nirban “to be by far the best book that has yet been written by a Bengali lady” and in calling ‘it one of the ablest in the whole literature of Bengal.” It is needless to add that the work gave promise of great future excellence, Srimati Svarna Kvnari Devi's two next books “Basanti Utsav" or the Spring Festival, a melodrama and “Chhinna Mukul" or the Broken Blossom, a novel, followed each other in quick succession. Basanta Utsav contains many passages of intrinsic poetic beauty and many sweet songs, which testify to the writer's powers as a poet and a musical com. poser. She has evidently inherited a large shale of the superior musical talents of her family, which has the honour of claiming Raja Sourindra Mohun Tagore as one of its ornaments. Chhinna Mykul, which is a tale of our own days comes quite up to the mark, and fully supports the
