অত্যাচারে সুন্দরবন যে বিধবস্ত হইয়াছিল, ইহা সকলেই একবাক্যে স্বীকার করিয়া থাকেন। * এই সমস্ত কারণে সুন্দরবনের গ্রাম নগরাদি ধ্বংস প্রাপ্ত হইয়া জনশূন্ত অরণ্যে পরিণত হয়। কিন্তু আমরা পূৰ্ব্বাপর বলিয়া আসিয়াছি যে, ইহার সকল স্থান যে লোকজনের বাসভূমির যোগ্য ছিল, এরূপ প্রতীত হয় না। তাহ না হইলেও ইহাতে যে সমস্ত গ্রাম নগরাদি ছিল, তাঙ্গ কালে ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত হইয়াছে। অদ্যপি ইহার স্থানে স্থানে তাহাদিগের চিহ্ন দেখিতে পাওয়া যায়। বাগেরহাটের নিকট খাঞ্জলির মসজীদাদির ও যশোর-ঈশ্বরীপুরের নিকট প্রতাপাদিত্যের প্রাচীন বাসের চিহ্ন ।
