‘83 এককালে গ্রাম নগরাদির অস্তিত্ব ছিল। কিন্তু ইহার অধিকাংশ স্থানই বহুদিন হইতে নিবিড় অরণ্যে সমাচ্ছাদিত হইয়া, ব্যাঘ্ৰ, গণ্ডার, কুম্ভীরের আশ্রয়স্থান রূপে বিরাজ করিতেছিল । সুতরাং সুন্দরবনের কোন কোন ংশে লোকজনের বাসভূমি এবং কোন কোন অংশ যে বনভূমি ছিল, ইহাই সমীচীন বলিয়া বোধ হয় । স্বন্দরবন যে বীরভূইয়াদিগের অধীনে প্রসিদ্ধি লাভ করিয়াছিল, আমরা এক্ষণে র্তাহাঁদেরই বিষয় আলোচনা করিতেছি। বাঙ্গল দেশ বহুদিন হইতে বারভূইয়ার মুলুক নামে অভিহিত হইয়া আসিতেছে। কিন্তু মোগলবিজয়ের সময় যে সমস্ত পরাক্রাস্ত ভূইয়া আপনাদিগের বাহুবলের পরিচয় প্রদান করিয়াছিলেন, আমরা কেবল র্তাহাদেরই বিবরণ উল্লেখ করিতেছি। কিন্তু তৎপূৰ্ব্বে আমরা বারভূইয়ার বারভূইয়। of Gobra and of Soondarban lot No. 21.2 : some ruins of masoury buildings and traces of old court yards and here and there some garden plants and shrubs remain to the present day in lot No. 21 I close to the khal which separates it from lot No. 212, and attest in some measure the ti nth of the legend. Mr. Swinhoe has published a figure of the ruins lately discovered in lot No. 116. The temple is of the Budhist type of archite&ture. In lot No. 146 there are brick ruins with terracotta ornaments. Most of the ruins are on the banks of the Cobatak. Colonel Gastrell in his Geographical and Statisfical report of the districts of Jessore, Faridpore and Bakergunge speaking of old ruins states:—“But all enquiry failed mothing could be found save the ruins already mentioned on the banks of the Cabatak river.
