২য় সংখ্যা ? বিবিধ প্রসঙ্গ—রেলওয়ে-যান্ত্রেীদের দিবস abrる হয় নাই ; উহা এন্সাইক্লোপীডিয়া ব্রিটানিক অপেক্ষা নূতন । তাহাতে শিবাজী সম্বন্ধে লিখিত হইয়াছে – . “The founder of the Mahratta power was Sivaji, a freebooter or adventurer, whose father, Shahji Hhonsla, was an officer in the service of the last King of Bijapur. By policy or by force, he eventually succeeded in compelling the several independent Hindu chiefs to acknowledge him as their leader and with the large army then at his Command overran and snbdued a large portion of the emperor of Delhi's territory.” এখানে শিবাজীকে বলা হইতেছে দস্থ্য, এবং ভাগ্যাম্বেষী। বিজেতা মাত্রেই শত্রুর ধন-সম্পত্তি লুণ্ঠন করিয়া থাকে, তাহীদের দোষগুণের বিচার এখানে করিতেছি না। কিন্তু শিবাজী দস্থা ছিলেন না, এবং নিজের জন্য ধনসঞ্চয়ের চেষ্টাও করেন নাই । আফজাল থার সহিত র্তাহার ব্যবহারের প্রকৃত বৃত্তান্ত অধ্যাপক যন্ত্রনাথ সরকার সমুদয় মারাঠি, ফারসী ও ইংরেজী মৌলিক উপাদান পড়িয়া লিথিয়াছেন। ইংরেজদের রাজাপুরের ফ্যাক্টর অর্থাৎ কুঠিয়ালরা স্বরাটস্থিত কোঁন্সিলকে ১৬৫৯ ঈশাদের ১০ই অক্টোবর যে চিঠি লেখেন, তাহা সমসাময়িক । সরকার মহাশয় তাহাও ব্যবহার করিয়াছেন । আফজাল-বধের প্রক্লত বৃত্তান্ত তল্লিখিত ইংরেজী শিবাজী-চরিতের তৃতীয় অধ্যায়ে দৃষ্ট হইবে । তাহা হইতে অল্প একটু নীচে উদ্ধৃত করিয়া দিলাম । “The command of the expedition against him (Shivaji) went abegging at the Bijapur Court, till Afzal Khan accepted it. Afzal Khan did not prefer an open contest with Shiva. . . . Indeed he was instructed by the Dowager Queen to effect the capture or murder of Shiva by pretending friendship with him and offering to secure his pardon from Adil Shah. . . . The Bijapuri General had accepted the command in a spirit of bravado, and even boasted in the open Court that he would bring Shiva back a căptive without having once to dismount from his own horse. . . . . then came Afzal’s envoy with the invitation to a parley. . . . Shiva sent the envoy back with Gopinath Pant, his own agent, agreeing to Afzal's proposal of an interview, provided that the Khan gave him a solemn assurance of safety. . . . Through Gopinath Pant Shiva ا لا يستمدية بعة vowed that no harm would be done to Afzal, during the interview, and Afzal, on his part, gave similar assurance of his honesty of purpose. . . . Shiva mounted the raised platfrom and bowed to Afzal. The Khan rose from his seat, advanced a few steps, and opened his arms to receive Shiva in his embrace. The short slim Maratha only came up to the shoulders of his opponent. Suddenly Afzal tightened his clasp, and -held Shiva's neck in his left arm with an iron grip, while with his right hand he drew his long straight-bladed dagger and struck at the side of Shiva. Shiva groaned in agony as he felt himself being strangled. But in a moment he recovered from his snrprise, passed his left arm round the Khan's waist and tore his bowels open with the blow of the steel claws. Then with his right hand he drove the bichhwa into the Khan's side”. শ্রদ্ধানন্দ পার্কের বক্তৃতায় আমি এইসব কথা বলিয়া প্রস্তাব করিয়াছিলাম, যে, শিবাজী উৎসবের সভাসমূহ হইতে সভাপতিদিগের স্বাক্ষরযুক্ত এক একখানি চিঠিতে ইংরেজী এন্সাইক্লোপীডিয়া বা বিশ্বকোষগুলির ভ্রম নিরসন করিয়া তাহ এন্সাইক্লোপীডিয়া ব্রিটানিকার প্রকাশকদিগকে এবং চেম্বাসের এন্সাইক্লোপীডিয়ার প্রকাশকদিগকে পাঠান হউক । আমি ইহাও বলিয়াছিলাম, যে, শিবাজী কেবল হিন্মুদের বীয় নহেন, সমগ্র ভারতীয় মহাজাতির বীর । আমার দেহে হিন্দুর রক্ত প্রবাহিত হইতেছে বলিয়া যে আমি ইহা বলিতেছি, তাহা নহে ; বিদেশী অহিন্দুবংশজাত লোকেরাও অনেকে ইহা স্বীকার করেন। বিখ্যাত বিজ্ঞান খ্ৰীষ্টিয়ান পাদরী ডাক্তার ম্যাকুনিকল (Rev. Dr. N. MacNicol, M.A., D. Litt) ICFTR :— “Shivaji belongs to no class or caste. He is a national possession. India has every right to set the Maratha warrior-king in a high place among those whom she remembers with gratitude.” রেলওয়ে-যাত্রীদের দিবস ভারতবর্ষে রেলওয়ে ও ষ্টীমারের যাত্রীদের—বিশেষতঃ তৃতীয় শ্রেণীর যাত্রীদের নানা দুঃখ কষ্ট ও লাঞ্ছনা আছে।
