बष्किा ब्राफ़नावव्ौं আড়ম্বরশান্য। ভাবও সরল, এবং আড়ম্বরশান্য। লেখকের হৃদয়ও যে সরল এবং আড়ম্বরশন্য, এই গ্রন্থ তাহার পরিচয়। লেখক সব্বত্ৰেই গণগ্রাহী, উৎসাহশীল, এবং সংপ্ৰসন্ন। তাঁহার রচিও সািন্দর, বদ্ধি মাতিজািত, এবং বিচারক্ষমতা অনিন্দনীয়। বিশেষ, তাঁহার একটি গণ দেখিয়া আমরা বড় প্রীত হইয়াছি। চিত্রে বা খোদিত প্রস্তরে যে রস, বাঙ্গালীরা প্রায়ই তাহা অনভূত করিতে পারেন না। বালকে বা চাষায় “সং" দেখিয়া যেরপে সখি বোধ করে সশিক্ষিত বাঙ্গালীরাও চিত্ৰাদি দেখিয়া সেইরূপ সখি বোধ করেন। এই গ্রন্থের লেখক সে শ্রেণীর বাঙ্গালী নহেন। তিনি চিত্রাদির যে সকল সমালোচনা পত্রিমধ্যে ন্যস্ত করিয়াছেন, তাহাতে বিশেষ রাসান ভাবিকতা এবং সহৃদয়তা প্রকাশ পায়। ইউরোপে পয্যটন করিলে, ভুবনে অতুল্য চিত্রাদি দর্শনে, এবং তত্ত্ববিষয়ের বিচক্ষণ বিচারকদিগের সহবাসে যে বদ্ধি মাতিজাতা, এবং রসগ্রোহিণী শক্তি সাফারিতা হইবে, ইহা সঙ্গত। কিন্তু এ লেখকের রসগ্রাহিণী শক্তি সবভাবজাতাও বটে। তিনি ইউরোপে প্রবেশ করিবার পর্বেই মাল্টা নগরে ‘Charity” র গঠিত মৰ্ত্তি দেখিয়া লিখিয়াছেন :-- 'It is impossible for me to do scribe in adequate terms the meekness and tender pathos that dwells in the placid and unclouded face o the mother as she gazes with a loving and affectionatic look on the sweet heaven of her infant's face. I stood there I know not how long, but this I know I could have stood there for hours together, and not have wished to go away.' p. 11-12. পাস্তকের মধ্যে মধ্যে যে সকল বর্ণনা আছে, তাহাতে আমরা প্রীত হইয়াছি। সে সকল গ্রন্থকারের লিপিশক্তির পরিচয়। উদাহরণস্বরপ আমরা নিম্নলিখিত বৰ্ণনাটি উদ্ধত করিলাম From Iona we went to the small uninhabite island of Staffa containng sev (oral wonderful ra v cu , of which I'ingal’s cav, e is the mo-t magnificent. This cave with its splendid arch 70 feet high, supporting an italblature of 30 feet addititonal,--its dalk basaltic pillars, its arching roof above, and the sca ever and anon lishing and roaring helow, is a most wonderful sight indcc.d. The sea being calm we went in a boat to the inler end of the cave. The walls consist of countles gigantic columns sometimes square, often pentagonical or hexagonical, and of a dark purple color which adds to the sclemnity of the aspect of the place. The roof itself consists of overhanging pillars; and every time that the wave connes in with a roaring sound, the roof, the caverns, and thc thousand pillars return the sound increased tenfold, and the whole effect is grand.’ p. 48. স্থানাভাব প্রযক্ত আমরা অন্যান্যাংশ উদ্ধত করিতে পারিলাম না, কিন্তু ইহা বলিতে পারি যে, তাঁহার চক্ষ সৌন্দৰ্য্যানসন্ধায়ী-যেখানে যাহা দেখিয়াছেন, তাহার সন্দের ভাগ গ্রহণ করিয়াছেন। যখন তিনি কালিদানীয় খালের মধ্যে, তখনকার অবস্থায় অনেকেই বিরক্ত হইয়া ऎठैऊन् : ऊन् िब्जिश्शिाँश्छन्न - 'Oh both sides of us were continuous chains of mountains, and it being very bad weather, dark clouds hanging over our heads served as a gloomy canopy extending from the ridges on our right to those on our left. As far as the eye could reach, before or behind, there was nothing but this gloomy vista,-the dark clouds above, dark waters below, and high mountains on both sides of us. The scene was grand indeed, and I can assure you. I would not have changed that gloomy scene of highland grandeur for the neatest and prettiest spot in the earth, nor ever for the sunniest sky, the dark rolling clouds which added to the gloom and sublimity of the scene.' p. 50.
