A BILL TO REGULATE THE PLURALITY
OF MARRIAGES BETWEEN HINDUS
IN BRITISH INDIA.

 Whereas the institution of marriage among Hindus has

 become subject to great abuses, which are alike

Preamble  repugnant to the principles of Hindu Law and the feelings of the people gencrally: and whereas the practice of unlimited Polygamy has led to the perpetration of revolting crimes, and whereas it is expedient to make Legislative provision for the prevention of those abuses and crimes, alike at variance with sound policy, justice, and morality: It is enacted as follows:—

 I. No marriage, contracted by any male person of the Hindu religion, who has a wife alive, shall be valid, unless such person, on his remarriage, shall comply with tlie provisions of this act relative to remarriages.

 II. Every male person of the Hindu religion, who desires to contract a fresh marriage, while he has a wife alive, shall prepare a written application, setting forth the grounds on which he claims to be allowed to remarry, and shall present the same to the Local Committee or Punchayet appointed to roceive such applications.
