Troops opened fire and seven people were killed. The authorities said anti-social elements had been stabbing, looting and trying to create panic, and that forty-five people were arrested. He estimated that from reports he received during his visit at least a quarter of a million people had been killed. Mr. Douglas-Mann said he was hoping to persuade the British Government to withhold financial and other help for Pakistan until peace was restored. He also said Britain should recognize Bangladesh.
