Islamabad's repeated assertions that law and order have returned and that things are back to normal, are quite contrary to reports from reliable sources. The situation there is in fact deplorable. Towns and villages have been left in ruins and the economic life has come to a complete standstill. It is at this point that the tragedy of Bengal turns into a scandal. Not one of the Big Powers dared to lift a single finger to put a stop to the brutality with which the Bengalis have been treated.
