One behalf of the Secretary of the United Nations, I acknowledge receipt of your cable of 18 August 1971 on the subject of the trial of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The fate of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is a matter of concern to the SecretaryGeneral., whose reaction to reports concerning his impending trail Was set forth on 10 August 1971 in a press statement by the United Nations spokesman. A copy of that statement is attached for your information.
The Secretary: - General is however regretfully unable to accede to your request in this specific matter. He has been doing and continues to do all he can, within his competence and authority, to prevent an aggravation of the situation. I am sure you will understand this has to be done with all the necessary discretion and lack of publicity.
