NO. 812-337-3709 Dear Muhith, You are undoubtedly aware of the incredible things happening in East Pakistan. Literally millions have been driven away from homes and thousands of villages have been razed to the ground. There are over seven million refugees in India, many of them have already died of cholera. Ten to thirty millions are facing starvation. Even this quiet mid-western community has become very concerned and a local committee which includes the chancellor, a number of deans and three or four departmental chairmen has lunched a large scale drive to raise money from the community, the students and the faculty. Our appeal letter and the format of our newspaper advertisement are enclosed. Newspapers have donated space. I wonder if it would be possible to organize a similar committee and a fund raising drive in your community. It is essential to raise enormous amounts of money for food and clothing and to stop this famine of colossal magnitude. If you want to help please organize a similar thing and feel free to use our appeal letter and solicit funds through the mail, newspapers and church organizations. The Bangladesh Association is a completely non-profit organization registered with the Internal Revenue Service of the U. S. government. It has direct contact with (i) Oxfam, the British relief organization (ii) the government of India (iii) the provisional government of Bangladesh which is exploring the means of directly sending aids within East Pakistan. Its account is legally open for inspection. If you can organize a fund raising campaign, this association would supply with an appropriate receipt book. I personally know this organization very well.
