Do not care for the general effect. Time will look to that. If I have succeeded in the above-mentioned particulars-that is to say, if there is good poetry in the book, expressed in elegant and choice language, and if each verse is musical, then my friends need not be troubled on my account. The Book will float up-if not to-day or to-morrow, at least, thirty years hence. . . . In submitting this thing to you and to our learned friends, I am anxious that you should tell me whether you find any poetry in it, and whether that poetry is expressed in poetical language. The verse is what in English we would call "Alexandrine" i.e. containing 6 feet. The longest verse in our language is the 7 footed 233-but that is, like the Greek and Romam Hexameter, too long and pompous for dramatic purposes. The Greek and Latin Dramas are not written in Hexameter. Our 7 footed verse is our "heroic" measure. I hope, one of these days, to send you specimens of it. When I first began to write my ear used to rebel, but now I have grown completely reconciled to Bengali Blank verse, and its melody and power astonish me. The form of verse in which this drama is written, if well recited, sounds as much like prose as English Blank verse sounds like English Prose-retaining at the same time a sweet musical impression.
