বীরাঙ্গনা-কাব্য । ” S ভাষা অপেক্ষা উন্নত হয় নাই। ইহা বহুদিন পৰ্য্যন্ত চতুৰ্দশাক্ষরী অমিত্ৰচচ্ছন্দের ভাষার আদর্শ স্বরূপ থাকিবে । বীরাঙ্গনা-কাব্য মধুসূদনের প্রতিভা-বিকাশের উৰ্দ্ধতনসীমা স্বরূপ ; ইহার পর হইতে র্তাহার প্রতিভাব অধোগতি আৱব্ধ হইয়াছে। পাঠক মধুসূদনের পত্রে দেখিয়াছেন যে, মহাদাজা যতীন্দ্রমোহন ঠাকুরের অনুবোধে, মহাভারতীয় কোন ঘটনা এবং বাবু রাজনারায়ণ বসু মহাশয়ের অনুরোধে, সিংহল-বিজয়-বৃত্তান্ত অবলম্বন কবিয়া, তিনি দুইখানি কাব্য রচনা কবিতে মনস্থ করিয়াছিলেন । দুইখানিরই প্ৰথম অংশ আবদ্ধ হইয়াছিল, কিন্তু কোন খানিই সম্পূর্ণ হয় নাই । মেঘনাদবধে যেমন তিনি ইলিয়ডের অনুসরণ করিয়াছিলেন, সিংহল-বিজয়-কাব্যে তেমনই ইনিয়াডেব অনুসরণ করিবার তাহার ইচ্ছা ছিল । * সিংহলবিষয় অবলম্বনে লিখিত কবিতাটির প্রাবন্ত-অংশ নিম্নে সন্নিবিষ্ট হইল ;-
- মধুসুদন কিরূপ ভাবে সিংহলবিজয় রচনা করিবেন বলিয়া সঙ্কল্প করিয়াছিলেন, তাহার নিম্নোদ্ধত ইংরাজী মন্তব্য হইতে পাঠক তাহ অনুমান করিতে পাবিবেন।
