পরিশিষ্ট । *Ե8 (: You know all about Modhu's Madras life during his stay there. When in 1855 his paternal house at Kidderpore became the subject of dispute, under Act IV of 184o, and two parties were fighting over its possession before Mr. Fergusson, the Magistrate of 24Parganas, I felt the necessity of having Modhu up here at once, to prevent further litigation, and to see that he entered into possession of the property as the only legal heir and rightful claimant. His patrimony was being frittered away by his uncles and cousins under a forged will, alleged to have been left by his father, who, as a matter of fact, had done nothing of the kind. When pressed on his death-bed to make a will, Modhu's father observed, Test first Q & CRC, i.e., "he whose estate it is, will come and take it." But I was not sure of Modhu's whereabouts at the moment. I entrusted my letter to the Revd. K. M. Banerjee, who was then going to Madras, with a request to ferret Modhu out from wherever he might be, and to hand it to him personally. He kindly carried out my request Modhu came up like a shot. The first thing I told him on his arrival t was to go and see the people who were in his father's house. He went and returned somewhat crest-fallen, not so much at the peril in which he found his father's effects and his mother's jewellery involved, as at the sight of his unprotected, lone stepmother who, in the full bloom of her youth and beauty, was withering in the sco ching blast of perpetual widowhood. The sight deeply saddened his heart, and opened his eyes to the dreary desolation which his desertion had spread round his paternal home and hearth, through the untimely death of his heart-broken father, That Modhu was destined to be a poet was predicted by me, as early as 1841, and my prognostication has been verified. This fact was publicly noticed at the meeting that was held in the house of my young friend, the late Babu Kali Prasanna Singh, in honour of Modhu, to present him with an address and a silver vase. Modhu's Muse created a new era. How a trifling incident roused her to warble to the tunes of our Vina has been described by you at length. It is ope of the instances of what mighty things

As soon as he alighted from the steamer he ran to me. He then lived with me for a time. He had not a pice in his pocket. It was therefore, absolutely necessary that some provision should be made for him.' I asked my friends, Kisory and Raja Degamber, to meet us at a dinner party given at my place. They wrote in reply, expressing delight at Modhu's return and readily accepting the invitation. Both were Modhu's intimate friends, I asked Kisory who appreciated his genus and who was then the Junior Magistrate of Calcutta, Northern Division, to use his best efforts to help Modhu by securing for him some employment. He promised to do so. The post of in.erpreter in his Court soon after fell vacant, and Modhu was given the appointment.
