डीवन-ब्रिड । و هوا ing had innumerable opportunities, during that time, of coming in contact with him, I ought to be in a position to supply you with at least some anecdotes regarding him, which may be interesting in his biography; but unfortunately as I look back along the vista of nearly three score years and eight that I have passed, the farthest, retrospect appears enveloped in a mist. There is no doubt a vivid fact here, or a bright event there, relating to Modhu, which peeps out of the dim scene, but in the narration of most of these I have been either forestalled in the text of the biography, and in the Reminiscences of the poet contained in the Appendix, or they are small trivialities, unworthy of being placed before your readers. Under these circumstances, there are only a few facts and observations, concerning the subject of your biography, which I can offer for your acceptance. They are the following :- My reminiscences of Michael M. S. Dutt begin from the year I846. About the latter end of that year, on a Sunday, I, in conpany with some fellow teachers of the Seal's Free College, went on a pleasure trip down the river, in a boat, as far as the Botanical Garden, at Sibpore After visiting the garden, we went to see the Bishop's College, which is close by. There we met Michael who seemed to be greatly rejoiced on seeing us. He very robligingly conducted us through the several apartments of the scollege, and then came with us to our boat, where he remained in our company for over an hour. We parted at nightfall. He was then about 22 or 23, and our interview, short as it was, enabled me even then to observe in him unmistakable signs of a great mind. His amiable and highly intelligent countenance, his fascinating manners, his lively conversation, his ready wit, and above all, his inexhaustible fund of information on literary subjects, all went to show him as one far above the ordinary run of the educated natives of the time, andmade an impression in my mind, which time has not been able to efface. It was thus at the Bishop's College that I saw our friend Modhu for the first time. Since then we did not see each other, until his connection began with the Belgachia. Theatre in 1858. There is little left for me to say regarding the performances of 'Ratnaboli, and 'Shormishta' at the Belgachia. Theatre. After the last performance of the latter play that Theatre was virtually closed It is true that the two farces “acकई कि बल नडाड” and "y" if (PS Vicy (iii" were written by our friend Michael for the Belgachia Theatre, but they were not acted there. This may provoke enquiry, and would require an explanation. That explanation can be given only by two persons now living. The first is our respected Maharajah Bahadur Sir Joteendra Mohun Tagore, and the second my humble self. But as the Maharajah has not touched that point in his memorandum, I think it incumbent on me to say a few words by way of explanation.
