কাস্তবাবু ২৯১ কাউন্সিলের অবমাননার জন্য ক্লেভারিংসাহেব প্রস্তাব করেন যে, কাস্তবাবুকে কোন প্রকার গুরুতর শাস্তি দেওয়া হউক । গবর্নর জেনারেল বলেন যে, কান্তবাবু উচ্চপদস্থ বলিয়া সকলে তাহার সম্মান করিয়া থাকে। র্তাহার প্রতি কোন প্রকার শাস্তিবিধান হইতে পারে না । বিশেষতঃ তিনি গবর্নর জেনারেলের কর্মচারী বলিয়া, সুপ্রীমকোর্টের সীমানিবিষ্ট ও কাউন্সিলের সীমাবহিভূত। হেস্টিংস আরও বলেন যে, তিনি র্তাহার নিজের জীবন দিয়াও কান্তবাবুকে রক্ষা করিতে প্রস্তুত। অনেক তর্ক-বিতর্কের পর ক্লেভারিংসাহেব পুনর্বার প্রস্তাব করিলেন যে, গবর্নর অতি সামান্য অপরাধের জন্য প্রত্যহ দুর্ভাগ্য হিন্দুদিগকে যে তুড়ুম পরাইয়া থাকেন, আমি কান্তবাবুকেও সেই শাস্তি প্রদান করিতে ইচ্ছা করি ৪ ১ হেস্টিংস ইহাতে ঘোর আপত্তি করেন । যাহা হউক সে দিবস এ-বিষয়ের কোনই মীমাংসা হয় নাই এবং কাস্তবাবুও অবমাননার হস্ত হইতে নিস্কৃতি লাভ করিয়াছিলেন । - আমরা পুনঃ পুনঃ বলিয়াছি, যে স্থানে হেস্টিংসাহেব উৎকোচ গ্রহণ করিতেন, সেই স্থানেই কান্তবাবু উপস্থিত থাকিতেন। এ সম্বন্ধে আরও দুই একটি দৃষ্টান্ত দেখান যাইতেছে। হিজলীর ইজারদার পূর্বোল্লিখিত কমলউদ্দীন, মহারাজ নন্দকুমার ও ফাউকসাহেবের নিকট উপস্থিত হইয়া, নিম্নলিখিত মর্মে কাউন্সিলে এক আজি পেশ করিয়া বলে যে, তিন বৎসরের মধ্যে তাহার নিকট হইতে বারওয়েলসাহেব obey it?—A. For the same reasons as those I before mentioned. Q. Did you not receive another order to attend the Board of Revenue on Friday the 17th instant –A. I did not receive any on Friday, I got one on Saturday, to attend at the First Council and I returned for answer to Mr. Summer, that I would attend at the First Council. I went to Mr. Summer's that morning, and I learnt that there was no Board there, but he directed me to be present on the First Council day. Q. Did you receive an order of this Board to attend here today 7–A. I received no written order today. A person left word at my gate, and on receiving the notice I came. Q. Do you know from whom that person came –A. I did not see the peon. My people told me that a peon had come with an order of Council, and had left word, that it was the Council's order for me immediately to attend."
