ঐতিহাসিক বিবরণ। tులి লুকের নাম পাওয়া যায়। তমলুকের সংস্কৃত নাম তাম্রলিপ্তি। তাম্রলিপ্তি শব্দের অর্থ কি, সংস্কৃত হইতে তাহা বুঝা যায় না। সংস্কৃতে তাম্রলিপ্তির মানে তামায় লেপা। কিন্তু তমলুকের নিকট কোথাও তামার খনি নাই। তমলুক হইতে যে তামা রপ্তানী হইত তাহার কোন নিদর্শন পাওয়া যায় না। প্রাচীন সংস্কৃতে উহার নাম দামলিপ্তি অর্থাৎ উহা দামল জাতির একটা প্রধান নগর । বাঙ্গালায় যে এক কালে দামল বা তামল জাতির প্রাধান্ত ছিল ইহা হইতেই তাহ কতক বুঝা যায়। এখনকার Anthropologistsgi fgā FfFTIER যে, বাঙ্গালী মঙ্গল ও দ্রবিড় জাতির মিশ্রণে উৎপন্ন হইয়াছে।” * “আঠার শত বৎসর পূর্বের তামিল” নামক গ্রন্থেও অনুসন্ধিৎসু *few so forg fiftita: “Most of the Mongolion tribes emigrated to Southern India from Tamalitti, the great emporium of trade at the mouth of the Gung s and this accounts for the name “Tamils” by which they were collectively known among the most ancient inhabitants of Deccan.
