'MARY CARPENTER.”—This is a short biographical, sketch of Miss Mary Carpenter, the celebrated phi-lanthropist of Bristol. This, we believe, is the first Bengalee rendering of the life of Mary Carpenter. The authoress, Miss Kumudini Mitra B. A., is a talent-ed daughter of our patriotic countryman, Babu Krishna Kumar Mitra, the editor of “Sanjibanee.” The excellent services of Miss Mary Carpenter in the spread of female education in this country justly call for a ready response in our educated girls of today. It is, therefore, in the fitness of things that a lady graduate of our University should undertake to bring out the life of one who did so much for the betterment of her sex. Miss Mitra is already known to the reading public of Bengal as the writer of that inspiring, little book “Shikher Balidan.” The warm enthusiasm and utmost familiarity with which she narrates and explains the events and works of Mary Carpenter's life not only interests the reader but gives him an insight into the life of the philanthropist. The book is written in an elevated style, and altogether it is a pleasant and profitable reading both for the young and old. The get-up of the book leaves nothing to be desired and is as inviting as the book itself.
