It is pleasing to find that the author has taken great pains in gathering information about religious sects and sentiments which are calculated to be factors of cardinal importance to mould the character of the people and to form a basis of the History of a nation. The author is to be congratulated for the fair performance of the arduous task he has undertaken. The work has been decorated with several pictures, mass of neglected papers both private and offical. The author richly deserves encouragement at the hands of the public for the production of this valuable work which we doubt not throws a flood of light on the materials which served to constitute the basis of History of the District of Sylhet and which were hitherto unknown even to those who had curiosity to peep into the past regarding the importants of other Districts, would, we are sure, positively tend to give us much more important informations regarding the history of the nation than what we are now obtaining from the official Gazetteers. Babu Achyuta Charan Choudhuri is alrealy known to the Bengali reading public as a writer of some importance. His articles in the Bengali periodicals to which he often contributes place within the reach of the public his invastigations into the Vaishnave Iliterature of Bengal. But his crowning effort in the field of resarch has been this volume of history before us. It treats of geographical and historical accounts of the authoras own district. The amount of industry and research he has brougt to bear upon this work of leve does Mr. Choudhuri no small credit. It is by attempts like the one the author has made that sufficient mateials for a true history of Bengal can be forth coming. The book appears with an introduction by Prof. Padmanath Bhattacharya Vidyavionde M. A. Cotton College Gouhati, who we are glad to observe, has cooperated with the author in collecting materials for it, consists of no les than 800 pages, containing almost on every page much valuable information, In the opinion of the author, Sylhet, in the remote past, formed a part of the Aryan Kingdom of Pragivotishpur and the country of 'shi-li-tsa-to-lo' that Huen Tsiang decribcd as situated to the north-east of the Kingdom of Samatata was no other than Sylhet, so sylhet appears to have possessed the blessings of Aryan civilization at an early date. If it were not so, the long line of eminent men that it produced would be unaccountable.
