As the agents of Edward the Third were conducting his unfortunate kinsman Edward to Berkley Castle to put him to a grievous death, it came into their minds that, to prevent his being recognized by the people on the road, it would be well to have his head and beard shaved. They accordingly commanded the prince to alight from his horse, and obliged him to sit down on a mound by the way side. One of the escort, who officiated as barber, brought a bason of cold dirty water taken out of the next ditch. The prince, deeply afsected, burst into a flood of warm tears, which falling into the dish, he pathetically observed, “Behold, monsters, nature supplies what you would deny. Perform your office with this warm water.”
