It is an encouraging sign of the times that our countrymen are more and more turning their attention to the production of useful literature. There was a time-and that not very long ago-when the vast majority of our writers would think of nothing but poetry, works of fiction or short stories. These were good things in their way, but the intellect of a nation cannot be permanently fed upon works of this kind. Literature of the useful orderliterature that conveys information materially helpful to the individual, the family and the nation--is as much needed for the satisfaction of man's hankering for knowledge and for his general well-being as literature that pleases or even instructs. From this point of view something like a revolution has been effected in the field of Bengali literature during the last decade or so. Educated and accomplished youngmen have abandoned what might be called the traditional path and devoted themselves with earnestness and assiduity to the production of books on diverse subjects having a distinct bearing on the material welfare of our people. Politics and Sociology, History and Political Economy, Agriculture and Manufactures, Trade and Commerce--these and other subjects are beginning to receive an increasing measure of attention
