2 at the hands of our writers, especially in this Province, the most self-conscious of Indian Provinces. Some of the productions are in English, presumably because their authors wish their books to be read in Provinces other than Bengal. But there are others, like the volume before tus, which are in Bengali. We accord a cordial welcome to this publication. In it the author endeavours within the limits permitted by the scope and size of the book, to present truths of political economy to those of our countrymen who have no opportunity of reading the master-pieces on the subject in English or any other European language. Undoubtedly the production of books of this kind in Bengali is of the highest value and of the greatest importance from the point of view alike of enriching the Bengali language and literature and making it self-sufficient and thus placing tiseful knowledge within the reach of the common people who know no other language except their own. But another purpose which the book tries to serve, also within obvious limits, is to present economic truths with special reference to Indian conditions. As Prof. Benoyendranath Sen says in the admirable "Foreword ' with which he introduces the volume to the public, Political economy is now studied not as an abstract science, the principles of which are "universal and invariable "-in the sense in which those of mathematics, for example, are and are entirely independent of national and social conditions, but in relation to other cognate sciences, and with special political, physical, even religious conditions of particular peoples. Surely, therefore, if the subject of Political Economy is to be properly studied in India, it must first of all be treated from the Indian stand-point and preferably by Indian writers. In other words what is necessary is that there should be a distinctively Indian school of political economy just as there are German and American schools. So far as we know only two books, both of them in English, in which a systematic attempt has been made to traverse the whole range of Indian economic conditions : we mean Prof. Jadunath Sarkar's wellknown hand-book of Indian Bconomics and Babu Pramathanath Banerjea's
