সিরাজদ্দৌলা।
তাহাতে ইংরাজ ইতিহাস লেখকেরাও লজ্জায় অধোবদন হইয়া রহিয়াছেন![১]
যাঁহারা দুর্গমধ্যে আশ্রয়গ্রহণ করিয়াছিলেন, তাঁহাদের দুর্গতির অবধি রহিল না। সকলেই উপদেশ দিবার জন্য লালায়িত, কেহই উপদেশপালনের জন্য প্রস্তুত নহেন![২] বাহিরে নবাব-সেনার উন্মত্ত আস্ফালন, দুর্গমধ্যে ইংরাজমণ্ডলীতে তুমুল কোলাহল;—ফিরিঙ্গীদের আর্তনাদ, সৈনিকদিগের আত্মকলহ, সেনাপতিদিগের মতিভ্রম, নানাকারণে দুর্গমধ্যে শাসনক্ষমতা একেবারে শিথিল হইয়া পড়িল!
রাত্রি দুই প্রহরের সময়ে নবাবসেনা দুর্গপ্রাচীর উল্লঙ্ঘন করিবার জন্য বদ্ধপরিকর হইল। তাহা দেখিয়া দুর্গরক্ষার জন্য অগ্রসর হওয়া দূরে থাকুক, সকলেই নিজ নিজ প্রাণরক্ষার জন্য ব্যাকুল হইয়া উঠিলেন;—সেনাপতি উপর্য্যুপরি তিনবার দামামাধ্বনি করিয়া সকলকেই আহ্বান করিবার চেষ্টা করিলেন, কিন্তু প্রহরিগণ ভিন্ন আর কেহ সে
