কেবল ঘটনাবিবৃতির জন্য যে সকল ইতিহাস সঙ্কলিত হইয়াছে, তাহাতে দেখিতে পাওয়া যায় যে, সিরাজদ্দৌলার অন্যায় উৎপীড়নেই তাঁহার অধঃপতন সংঘটিত হইয়াছিল। কার্য্য সমালোচনা করিয়া নিরপেক্ষভাবে ইতিহাস সঙ্কলন করিলে, তাহাতে সকলকেই লিখিতে হইবে,—এই হতভাগ্য নর পতির অযথা কলঙ্কিত তরুণজীবনের অত্যাচার অবিচার উপলক্ষমাত্র; আমাদের চরিত্রহীনতাই মোগল-সাম্রাজ্যের অধঃপতনের মূল কারণ।
আরঙ্গজীবের শেষদশায় ভারতবর্ষে যে অরাজকতার সুত্রপাত হইয়াছিল; তাহাতে মোগলের রাজসিংহাসন টলিয়া উঠিয়াছিল; অন্তর্বিপ্লবের ছিদ্রলাভ করিয়া ফরাসী এবং ইংরাজ, এই দুই পরাক্রান্ত বিদেশীয় বণিকসমিতি দেশীয় লোকের সহায়তায় ভারতবর্ষে আত্মশক্তি সুদৃঢ় করিবার জন্য লালায়িত হইয়া উঠিয়াছিলেন। সিরাজদ্দৌলা তাহার গতিরোধ করিবার চেষ্টা করিয়া অকালে দেহবিসর্জ্জন করিয়াছিলেন; কিন্তু তিনি নিশ্চেষ্ট হইয়া বসিয়া থাকিলেও মোগলের সিংহাসন অটল রহিত না!
