I heartily welcome the publication of this book, as it will supply a want that has been long felt, but has now become pressing, owing to the increasing number of female medical practitioners, who have no work in vernacular on Gynæcology which they can consult and refer to. The movement of Her Excellency the Marchioness of Dufferin has for its chicf object the treatment of female diseases by female practitioners. For not only the pura'a. noshin women of this country, who have scarcely any objection to being treated by male practitioners in cases of ordinary diseases ; but also women of the lower classes have, as a rule, a great repugnance to treatment by male practitioners in diseases connected with the organs of generation. Moreover, when such diseases begin to make ravages, from their great reluctance to speak about them, even to their male relatives, they are eventually obliged to put themselves under the hands of ignorant Dhais, who, in nine cases out of ten, make their condition worse. The opening of our medical colleges to female students and the advent of female medical graduates from Europe have no doubt increased the number of qualified female practitioners.
