', / Z / ്ഗം ര %്, ീർ, /ർ, //് മ രമ്പ P R E F A C E . THE want of a concise yet sufficiently complete hand-book on Hygiene in Bengali, has been long felt. This want is to a great extent removed by the publication of Svásthyafindin by Dr. Das. In its pages the author has interwoven facts and figures compiled from the works of the standard authorities on the subject, with his personal experience in both urban and rural districts in Bengal. The subject matter has been very scientifically arranged and brought up to date. The book has been divided into two parts : Individual Hygiene and Public Hygiene. In the latter, the author has gone into the science of bacteriology with special reference to its practical application for the prevention of Cholera, Small-pox and other preventible diseases, and has treated the subject of vaccination at considerable length, refuting arguments generally advanced to detract from its value. The book has been written in plain Bengali, while the technical terms, instead of being translated, have been merely transliterated and placed side by side in most cases with the corresponding terms in English types, so that readers may be able to familiarise themselves with the current English terms, instead of committing to memory Bengali or Sanskrit words which are usually coined differently by different authors. The subjects of the work have been so arranged as to enable medical students intending to go up for their examinations, to find out at a glance the points that are most important. The portion of the book containing rules for the Inspection of Food, Analysis of Air, Water and Food, and Vaccinal Operation, will be very useful as a guide to
