under the present system, the Dacca College has been starved; the Professors have been few and underpaid and progress has languished. I hope that a fresh start is being made there, as I said in a ceremony in which I took part yesterday; but in a new province that experiment will have an even greater prospect of success.’
ইহাতে যে উৎসবের উল্লেখ রহিয়াছে তদুপলক্ষে লর্ড কর্জ্জন ঢাকা কালেজের দুর্দ্দশার কথা একটু বিস্তৃত ভাবে কহিয়াছিলেন, যথা:—
‘Further there are no play grounds for the physical recreation of the students. * * * there is no hall or buildings as a meeting ground for intellectual intercourse, where the professors and the students can mix together and get to know each other well. Above all the most crying evil, amounting almost to a scandal in the present situation, is that more than half of the students live in wretched boarding houses in the town, many of them unlicensed and uninspected, not always kept by the best of characters, and amid insanitary and undesirable surroundings’.
লর্ড কর্জ্জনের মতে ঢাকা হইতে বঙ্গের রাজধানী কলিকাতা বহুদূরে বলিয়া ঢাকা কালেজের দূরবস্থার একশেষ হইয়াছে—কালেজকে আঁতেমারা হইতে হইয়াছে, কালেজের অধ্যাপকদিগের সংখ্যা ও কম বেতন ও অল্প হইয়াছে, কালেজের ছাত্র ও অধ্যাপকদিগের মেশামিশি স্থান নাই, কালেজের সংলগ্ন উত্তম ছাত্রাবাস নাই, ইত্যাদি। কিন্তু আমাদের জিজ্ঞাস্য— হুগলী এবং কৃষ্ণনগর কলিকাতা হইতে বহুদূরে নয়, হুগলী কলিকাতা হইতে ১২ ক্রোশ মাত্র, তথাপি তথাকার কালেজদ্বয়েরও দুরবস্থার একশেষ হইল কেন?—তথাকার অধ্যাপকদিগেরও সংখ্যা এবং বেতন কম নয়
