336 TRIBUTEs TO HIs MEMORY. the wisest and best of her sons has been withdrawn when it was most needed. Capital, Dated Dec. 6, 1918. A Great Indian has just passed away in the person of Sir Gooroo Dass Banerjee whose deathon Monday night must have come as a shock to the public, for hardly any body had heard of his illness. The country is the poorer by his loss, for he was a true knight in every sphere in life. A more devoted and orthodox Hindu, a more pious man, a greater educationist, a sounder lawyer than the late Sir Gooroo Dass has seldom, if ever, been known. His life was unique and demonstrated, above cverything else, that it is possible to combine plain living with high thinking and that no Indian need imbibe Western manners and customs at the sacrifice of his own, even when sitting on the High Court Bench. Fearlessly independent, both as a Judge and a publicist, the late Sir Gooroo Dass' views on any matter of importance commanded high respect. His famous Note of Dissent, as a member of the Indian Universities' Commission, is but one instance of his strength of character. He was a member of many public bodies and the University of Calcutta, of which he has becna Vice-Chancellor, will miss most keenly the sobriety and wisdom of his counsels. the 6nglishman, December 4, 1918.
