Our honourable guest! Great Poet and Philosopher of the East! We are too humble to utter a word to suit your world-wide fame. But the city of Shiraz claims to have two men eternally living. The horizon of thought and study of these two great men is quite close to that of yours. The very same fountain-head, from which your verse and your philosophy spring, has irrigated the flower-bed of the existence of these two poets. The soul of Saadi, who since several hundred years lies at eternal rest underneath a sacred piece of soil in this City, is soaring up on this garden at this very moment, while at the same time smiles of pleasure and satisfaction are playing on the lips of Hafiz who is so glad with the happiness his countrymen are enjoying today.

শিরাজে অভ্যর্থনাসভায় গবর্নরের ভাষণ
It is a great day not only for Shiraz, but for the whole of Persia. We offer homage to you, sir, and our love. Great is our joy today that we can see with our own eyes and know one whom the world holds in honour. Your writings are an asset to humanity and more than anything else of today have bridged the gulf between man and man, between different races and nations. We feel confident that your personal presence in Iran will forge an unbreakable link between India and ourselves.
Let me assure you, Sir, that the association we have formed during your short visit to our country has been of the most pleasant and the most everlasting type. Though your sojourn in this country has been rather a short one, yet the memory of it will remain in our minds for ever to remind us for ever of your charming personality and your beautiful words.
Cultural and spiritual bonds have been in existence between Iran and India from very ancient days; but your visit to this land has renewed and strengthened these already existing bonds, which will be of mutual benefit for both countries.
It is with extreme pleasure that I wish to disclose the intention of His Majesty’s Government to create a Chair for Persian Culture in your University—a decision which has been taken with the permission of H. I. Majesty and in anticipation of your own sanction. The Ministry of Education has received orders to materialise this plan; and you will undoubtedly be supplied with the details of the situation.
Please accept my sincere wishes for the successful continuation of your blessed life and my best wishes for a bon voyage.

The Persian Chair, which, as is announced in your letter, is given by your Government to our Institution at Santiniketan, is not only worthy of the greatness of your nation but also the most hopeful sign of the revival in Asia of the munificent spirit of her past. Through this Chair you extend the best form of hospitability, which is that of your culture, to India, offering to share with us the wealth of your humanity, your richest treasure that is for all time. We feel proud to accept it and thank your people, on behalf of India, feeling certain that such an ideal gift blesses them who give and them who receive it.

রবীন্দ্রনাথের ভাষণ
We welcome you who have come as a messenger of the great Persian civilization to our land; we welcome you on behalf of Santiniketan and of India.
In different chapters of our history India has communed with your culture; through art and literature and philosophy we have built up a comradeship of civilization. Those were the golden days of Asia’s self-expression, when inspite of barriers of language and distance her neighbouring continents carried on a commerce of the spirit, rich in the wealth of realization, of wisdom garnered from many fields of effort and achievement.
Centuries of oblivion have intervened, the dust of time has covered up relics of India’s kinship with Iran. But the memory of that ancient union still runs in our blood, and in this great age of Asia’s Awakening we are once more discovering our affinities, we are rescuing from the debris of vanished ages the undying memorials of our cooperation.
You have come to us with that message of Asia’s awakening. Once more we are to light our lamps which ages ago Iran and India placed together on the altar of Asia’s common culture. The hymns we then sang in languages closely allied will yet again reverberate under Asia’s sky; we shall unite our hearts and our minds in quest of the inmost truths of our soul.
We of Asia are profoundly grateful to your great Monarch who with his indomitable personality and farreaching creative vision has ushered in a new age in Persia and inspired the neighbouring countries with a spirit of self-reliance and hope. We take this occasion to offer him our deep appreciation of his gracious friendliness in having invited me to his kingdom and given me a taste of Persia’s magnanimous hospitality, and in thus lending your services to our Visva-bharati in Santiniketan. No more wonderful manner of expressing his cordial fellowship could be chosen than thus sending to us one of the noblest emissaries of Persia’s culture.
Great is our joy today that we welcome you, our friend from Iran, to this Asrama of Santiniketan, where we have taken up the task of revealing the deepest mind of Asia. May our collaboration bind Persia and India close together in ties of intimate comradeship, uniting us once again in the responsibility jointly shared of restoring to the modern age the great gift which Asia has to offer to humanity.
