ASSYRIA, MEDIA, BABYLON, PERSIA.

Historians, as we have remarked, place the foundation of the Assyrian empire in remote and obscure antiquity. Its origin is generally ascribed to Nimrod or Ninus; and it is supposed to have continued from the year 2000 to the time of Sardanapalus, in whose reign it was subverted, B. C. 743. This account is controverted by others: all that can be offered therefore on this subject amounts only to conjecture, with which we shall not embarrass the reader. There appears, however, solid ground for the conclusion, that the Assyrian empire, or an Assyrian empire, was overturned in the time of Sardanapalus. He lived a life of oriental luxury, always in his seraglio, and seldom at his royal post. He stands forth in history as the prince of ancient epicureans, ‘Eat, drink, and be merry,’ so said the royal sage, Sardanapalus. An empire under such government must soon fall into the hands of some of its more energetic viceroys. Arbaces, governor of Media, encouraged by the king's effeminacy, and urged by his own ambition; leagued himself with some other discontented chiefs, more particularly with Belosus, the Babylonian, and determined to depose his sovereign. Sardanapalus, as if to disprove the popular opinion of his effeminacy, exerted himself with such vigour as repeatedly to check Arbaces; but Belosus bringing up the Babylonian auxiliaries, defeated him by a nocturnal stratagem, and he immediately took refuge in the wellfortified city of Nineveh. Arbaces besieged it for two years. It is said that a traditional prophecy, then current, had foretold that Nineveh would never be taken until the river Tigris became its enemy. Relying on this prophecy, Sardanapalus had shut himself up in the city; but in the second year of the siege, the Tigris overflowed its banks, inundated a portion of the city, and threw down a part of its impregnable walls, thus leaving an open path to the enemy. Sardanapalus, convinced that the term of his empire approached, shut himself up in his palace, with his wives, his treasures, and eunuchs, and setting fire to it, perished. Thus fell the empire of Assyria.

Arbaces, the conqueror, is said to have given the province of Babylon to Belosus, retaining Media and the neighbouring provinces for himself. Here commences the chief difficulty of this history. The Sacred Scriptures inform us that to this time Phul, king of Assyria invaded Palestine. Some writers therefore maintain that three empires arose out of that of Sardanapalus; viz. the Babylonian, the Assyrian, and the Median. Others, that Assyria was the general name for the region in the neighbourhood of the Tigris and the Euphrates, and that Phul was only another name for Belosus. This point we have not sufficient data to clear up, nor indeed does it appear of any great importance; for if a separate Assyrian empire did arise, it did not continue more than eighty years. The new Babylonian kingdom was in the mean time advancing to supreme dominion. Nebuchadnezzar carried his arms far and wide, and for the time, made Babylon the predominant power in Western Asia. He was the ‘head of gold’ mentioned in Scripture. After subduing the kingdom of Judah, he conquered Tyre, the great mart of commerce, B. C. 586 years. He next subjugated Egypt, and inflated with pride, erected a golden image sixty cubits high on the plains of Dura, which he commanded his subjects to fall down and worship. His successors receiving by inheritance a vast empire and a rich treasury, sunk as usual into oriental luxury, and were speedily overcome by a more energetic neighbour.

During the decline of the royal house of Nebuchadnezzar, Persia, a mountainous region of hardy warriors, was nourishing in its bosom a prince destined to overthrow the decayed kingdoms of Western Asia, and from their wreck to create such an empire, as the world had not hitherto seen. Cyrus, brought up to a hardy life in his native mountains, but gifted by nature with those qualities which form a great man, obtained possession of Media by inheritance. Western Asia lay before him, with its effeminate monarchs, ready to yield to the first conqueror. The period for another great revolution had arrived. After the acquisition of Media, Cyrus turned his arms against Assyria; but before he had time to subdue it, a new enemy arose in the person of Croesus, king of Lydia. Lydia, was a kingdom lying east of the region of Troy: its early history is fabulous. A few years before the rise of Cyrus, Cresus had succeeded to it by inheritance, and forming the plan of establishing a grand empire, subdued the Grecian colonies of Asia Minor, and extended his conquests westward to the river Halys. His subjects were a very industrious race of men, and he was reputed the richest monarch of the age: but he prided himself more on his love of philosophy than on wealth. His court contained a most brilliant assembly of wise and learned Grecians, who found in him a generous patron, and a cheerful companion. He had been liberal beyond measure to the priests at Delphi, whose influence he perhaps hoped to secure in the views which he cherished against the liberties of Greece. But the rapid progress of the arms of Cyrus made him tremble for his own safety, and in the hope of arresting his career, he gave all his support to the Assyrian monarch. Cyrus instantly determined to turn his arms against this new foe, and marched down with an overwhelming force upon Lydia. One single battle, in which Cyrus was completely victorious, nipped the empire of Lydia in the bud, and annexed the whole of Asia Minor to the Persian empire. Then bending his undivided attention to Babylon the Great, Cyrus took it after a long and fatiguing siege, and thus extinguished for ever the Babylonian empire. Having acquired by his valour the most extensive empire which the world had seen, he determined to consolidate and improve it. He was as wise in the cabinet as valorous in the field, and the nations under his sway had no reason to lament the exchange of their own effeminate monarchs for a vigorous and wise sovereign, who seemed anxious to render his sovereignty a real blessing to his subjects. We have now arrived at the second epoch of history, when the great empires and kingdoms which had occupied so conspicuous a place on the page of history, Assyria, Babylon, Media, Palestine, Phenicia, were incorporated in the almost universal monarchy of Persia. The death of Cyrus is placed 530 years B. C.
