Sylhet District (Sylhet division) is surrounded by the Khasia-Jainta hills of India on the north, Maulvibazar district on the south, Kachhar and Karimganj districts of India on the east, Sunamganj and Habiganj districts on the west. Area: 3490.40 sq km Population: 2569783; male 50.75%, female 49.25%; Muslim 91.96%, Hindu 7.80%, Christian 0.09%, and others 0.15%; ethnic nationals: Khasi (Khasia), Manipuri and Patra (Pathar). Sylhet Town: It consists of 27 wards and 210 mahallas. The area of the town is 10.49 sq km. It has a population of 285308; male 54.68%, female 45.32%; density of population is 27198 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 66.9%. The rapid growth and expansion of Sylhet occurred during the colonial period. Sylhet Municipality was established in 1878. Administration: Sylhet district was established on 3 January 1782. Until 1878, Sylhet was under the jurisdiction of Dhaka division. In the same year, Sylhet was included in the newly created Asam Province. Up to 1947 (excepting the Banga Bhanga period of 1905-1911) it remained a part of Asam. In 1947, as a result of a referendum, it was attached to the East Pakistan and was included in the Chittagong Division. The greater Sylhet was divided into four new districts viz Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Maulvi Bazar in 1983-84. On 1 August 1995 Sylhet was declared as the 6th division of the country consisting of the four districts of the greater Sylhet. 1. The Shrine of Hazrat Shah JalalShah Jalal is a saint of Bengal particularly in the region of Sylhet, Bangladesh. Jalal's name is associated with the Muslim conquest of Sylhet, for which he is given the most credit. He was buried at Sylhet.Shahjalal International Airport, Bangladesh's main airport is named in honour of this saint.
Early life and education Born Makhdum Jalal ad-Deen bin Muhammad, he was later known as Shaikh-ul-Mashaikh he was also known as Yamani(R) Hazrat Shah Jalal ad-Din al-Mujarrad (the last name could be related to his lifelong celibacy or performing of prayers in solitary milieu). Shah Jalal's date and place of birth is unclear. Various traditions, folklore and historical documents differ. A number of scholars claim that he was born in 1271 in Konya, Turkey, and later moved to Yemen, either as a child or adult, while vast majority of scholars believe he was born in Quni, Hadramout in Yemen. He was the son of a Muslim cleric, who was a contemporary of the Persian poet and Sufi saint, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi. He was educated and raised by his maternal uncle, Syed Ahmed Kabir, in Mecca. He excelled in his studies and became a Hafiz (one who has committed the Qur'an to memory) and was proficient in Islamic theology. He achieved Kamaliyat (spiritual perfection) after 30 years of study and meditation.
Travel to India According to legend, one day his uncle, Sheikh Kabir gave Shah Jalal a handful of soil and asked him to travel to Hindustan (India) with the instruction that he should settle in whichever place in Hindustan the earth of which matched completely the smell and color of that soil, and that he should devote his life to the propagation and establishment of Islam in that place. Shah Jalal journeyed eastward and reached India in c. 1300, where he met with many great scholars and mystics. In Delhi, he met with Nizam Uddin Aulia, another major Sufi mystic and scholar.[1] in the book of tajkeratul aulia written by Hazrat Sheik fariduddin Attar shahjajal was born in yemen in 1322 and died in 1384 which appears to be incorrect since Hazrat shajal(RA) met Hazrat Khaja Mainuddin Chisty (RA) and Hazrat Nizamuddin Awlia in Delhi in the year c.1300 which is hitorically proved fact,whereas the author fariduddin Attar born in the year c.1092 and died in hands of tatar dacoits within 100 year. Some unscruphulous publisher wrote that life scatch and included in the original Tajkeratul Awlia, as admitted by the Bangladeshi translator Md. Mustafijur Rahman that he has added some life scatch in the Bangladeshi edition published in the year 2003 by Meena Book House.
Conquest of Sylhet Dduring the conquest of sylhet a tribal chieftain named Gour Govinda ruled the Sylhet area, which was called Gaur Kingdom, and then predominantly inhabited by tribal people of Mongoloid origin. Govinda himself was of Tepra tribe of Tripura. Sheikh Burhanuddin, a Muslim who lived in the area under his control once sacrificed a cow to celebrate the birth of his son. A crow snatched a piece of the dead meat and it fell from its beak onto the house of a Brahmin Hindu, for whom cows were sacred. According to another tradition, the piece of flesh fell on the temple of the king himself, which he took as a great offence. On the orders of the king, Burhanuddin's hands were said to have been cut off and his son killed. Burhanuddin went to the Sultan of Gaur, Shamsuddin Firuz Shah, to whom he submitted a plea for justice. The Sultan accordingly sent an army under the command of his nephew Sikandar Khan Ghazi. He was, however, stopped by rains and flooding. The Sultan then ordered his Sipah Salar (armed forces chief) Nasiruddin to lead the war.
At this time, Shah Jalal (R) was requested by Nizam Uddin at the behest of Sultan Firoz Shah to travel to Sylhet along with Sikander Khan Ghazi to rescue Sheikh Burhan Uddin. With 360 followers, including his nephew Shah Paran, he reached Bengal and joined the Muslim army in the Sylhet campaign.
Knowing that Shah Jalal was advancing towards Sylhet, Raja Gaur Govinda, the king, removed all ferry boats from the river Surma, thereby cutting off any means of crossing into Sylhet. Legend has it that Shah Jalal crossed the river Surma by sitting on a Jainamaz (prayer rug). Upon reaching the opposite bank, he ordered the Azan (call to prayer) to be sounded, at which the magnificent palace of Gaur Govinda shattered. With Shah Jalal's help, the Hindus were completely defeated and crushed by the Muslim Army.
However, an inscription from Sylhet town, dated 1512-13, says that it was Sikandar Khan Ghazi who had actually conquered the town in the year 1303-4.
it was then later told, Shah Jalal found a match for the earth his uncle once gave him, and following to his uncle's wishes, he settled down in Sylhet, near Choukidhiki. It is from here that he preached Islam and became a celebrated Muslim figure in Bengal. He and his disciples traveled and settled as far as Mymensingh and Dhaka to spread the teachings of Islam, such as Shah Paran in Sylhet, Shah Malek Yemeni in Dhaka, Syed Ahmad Kolla Shahid in Comilla, Syed Nasiruddin in the region of Pargana Taraf, Haji Daria and Shaikh Ali Yemeni. An expedition to Chittagong was led by Khwaja Burhanuddin Qattan and Shah Badruddin. An expedition to Sunamganj was led by Shah Kamal Qattani, whose shrine is located in Shaharpara, Sunamganj.
Later life During the later stages of his life, Shah Jalal devoted himself to propagating Islam. Under his guidance, many thousands of Hindus and Buddhists converted to Islam. Shah Jalal became so renowned that even the world famous Ibn Battuta, then in Chittagong, was asked to change his plans and go to Sylhet to meet this great saint. On his way to Sylhet, Ibn Batuta was greeted by several of Shah Jalal (R.A)'s disciples who had come to assist him on his journey many days before he had arrived. Once in the presence of Shah Jalal (R.A), Ibn Batuta noted that Shah Jalal (R.A) was tall and lean, fair in complexion and lived by the mosque in a cave, where his only item of value was a goat from which he extracted milk, butter, and yogurt. He observed that the companions of the sheikh were foreign and known for their strength and bravery. He also mentions that many people would visit the sheikh to seek guidance. Shah Jalal (R.A) was therefore instrumental in the spread of Islam throughout north east India, including Assam.
The meeting between Ibn Batuta and Shah Jalal is described in his travelogue in Arabic, Rilah Ibn Baa (the Journey of Ibn Batuta). Amir Khusrau also gives an account of Shah Jalal (R.A)'s conquest of Sylhet in his book "Afdalul Hawaade". Even today in Hadramaut, Yemen, Sheikh Makhdum Jalaluddin's name is established in folklore.
The exact date of his death is unknown, but he is reported by Ibn Battuta to have died in 746 AH (1347 A.D). He left behind no descendants. He is buried in Sylhet in his Dargah (tomb), which is located in a neighbourhood now known as Dargah Mohalla. His shrine is famous in Sylhet and throughout Bangladesh, with hundreds of devotees visiting daily. At the Dargah is also located the largest mosque in Sylhet, one of the largest in the country.
2. The Shrine of Hazrat Shah ParanShah Paran (R) a renowned Sufi belonging to the Suhrawardia and Jalalia sects. It is said that he was the son of a sister of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) and was born in Yemen. He, with his uncle, took part in the expedition of Sylhet (1303 AD). After the conquest of Sylhet he established his Khanqah at Khadim Nagar in Dakshingarh Pargana, about 7 km away from Sylhet town, and started spiritual ascetic practice there. He played a significant role in propagating Islam and establishing Muslim rule in Sylhet region.
Even now a large number of people daily visit his tomb. On the 4th, 5th and 6th day of Rabi-ul-Awal, the Urs of Hazrat Shah Paran (R) takes place. His grave is located in a high hillock and it is carefully preserved at a place which is built with bricks and surrounded by walls. On the northern side of the grave there is an old tree, the branches and branchlets of which are extended above the entire tomb. The name of the tree is Ashagachh(a tree of hopes). From a close observation of the leaves of the tree, it appears that the tree has grown out of a mixture of the fig, mango and some other tree. People eat the seeds of the figs devotionally in the hope of getting rid of diseases. Mangoes are also eaten with utmost respect as Tabaruk. There is an ancient mosque by the side of the tomb. The mosque has been modernized in 1989-91. About 1500 devout Muslims in a body can now say their prayers there.
3. Shahi EidgahShahi Eidgah is an open prayer hall situated in Sylhet three kilometers to the north-east of the circuit house, meant for the Eid prayers. More than 100,000 people can perform prayer at same time in this Eidgah. It is also one of the most visited tourist spots in the city. The Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb built the Shahi Eidgah on a hill in the 17th century. It looks like a grand fort but is actually meant for Eid congregation.
4. Gour Govinda FortThe Murarichand Government College is situated in a beautiful surrounding on a hilltop. To the northwest of the college lie the remains of King Gour Govindas Fort.
5. Kean BridgeKean Bridge is over Surma River. Hanging over on the river of Surma is a bridge, made of iron and steel looked like a bow is gateway to Sylhet. This over is popularly known as Surma Baridge. 1150 feet lengths and 18 feet breadth, this bridge had been built during 1936. It named after Michael Kean, the then, English Governor. About Taka 56 lac had been spent to built the bridge.

Rampasha, Biswanath (Home of Mystic Poet Hason Raja & Eklimur Raja)Hason Raja (Bangla: হাসন রাজা, literary meaning - Hason the King), also known as Devan Hason Raja or Hason Raja Chowdhury, was a Bengali (now - Bangladesh) poet, mystic and folk songwriter. He gained international recognition years after his death, when Nobel prize laureate, poet Rabindranath Tagore mentioned him in his lectures at Oxford University.
Hason Raja is the great great Grand father of Safuwan Chowdhury and was the son of Dewan Ali Raja Chowdhury, who was a direct descendant of the Hindu king Raja Birendra Singhdev (later converted to Islam and became known as Babu Khan). Hason's mother was Ali Raja's second wife, Huramat Jahan Begum. He was born in 1854 near present day Sunamgonj, Sylhet. According to Tagore,Hason passed his childhood on the banks of Surma River, and the dream world of his parents had a strong impact on his whole life. The death of Hason's elder half-brother, Ubeydur Raja, followed by the death of his father Ali Raja (about 40 days later), put the power and responsibility of the whole family upon Hason at a very young age.[3] Tagore states that he abused his power and his masculine charm, until his mother's influence made him change his ways (the original quote, according to the source, reads "his mother inspires him back home from his unholy associations").This put a beginning to his religious pursuits and the life of an "Ascetic King".
Hason Raja died in 1922, years before his contribution to the poetry of Bengal was mentioned in lectures at Oxford University by Nobel poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Hason Raja is also known as Dewan Hasan Raja. A beautiful museum namely, Museum of Rajas' has been established in his anchestral home at Raja - Kunjo, Sylhet, Bangladesh; where historical exhibits of Hason Raja, Eklimur Raja, Talibur Raja, (grandson) and other respected Rajas' are displayed. 8. Shree Chaitanya Mandir (Nimai)About 500 years old famous about 45 km southeast from Sylhet town. The place is revered from being the ancestral home of the famous Vaishnava saint. Yearly fair is organized on the full moon day of the Bangla month Falgun. Hundreds and thousands of devotees from home and abroad attend this colorful fair.
9. Jainta RajbariJaintiapur is only 5 km. from Jaflong, a scenic spot amidst tea gardens. At about 35 km. northwest of Sylhet town, linked by rail, road and river is Chhatak, the seat of Assam Bengal Cement Factory, Chhatak is famous for orange garden. After complete Sripur on the way back to Sylhet don't miss to visit Jointika in Jointapur. Jaintapur was the capital of Jainta Kingdome at 18th century. Jainta Rajbari was the palace of Kings of Jainta, it�s just adjacent of Jainta Bazar. Though the condition of this king�s palace is already damaged enormously but a huge number of tourists visit here due to the historical background of Jainta Kingdom.
A lots of picnic parties goes to Jaintapur forests and also other areas of Jaflong, Sripur and Tamabil to enjoy a full day in the nature. So if you are planning to visit Jaflong you must cover up all these four places at a time and by the evening you come back to Sylhet for your night stay. Generally winter is the best season to visit Jaflong but if you want to enjoy the real beauty of wild waterfall then you should visit Jaflong in Monsoon.
