My dear Gour Babu, Accept my best thanks for your present, A present which I prize no less for its intrinsic value than for the kindness of the donor.

I am very anxious to have a perusal of your friend's manuscript drama, for I am pretty sure that he who wields his pen with such elegance and facility in a foreign language may contribute something to the meagre literature of his own country, which cannot but be prized by all I shall feel myself honoured by his visit to my humble garden, and shall wait there to receive him any evening that he may appoint.

 16th July, 1858.
Believe me, sincerely yours J. M. Tagore.

I hope to send you copies, English and Bengali, when ready. and you shall have an opportunity of judging for yourself.― ‘

My Dear Gour,
SUNDAY

You must excuse me for not complying with your request. The fact is, I do not like the idea of showing my play to our friends, in so incomplete a state. However, as I have promised, you shall have the first three Acts by the end of this week.

Ram Narayon’s “version,” as you justly call it, disappoints me. I have at once made up my mind to reject his aid. I shall either stand or fall by myself. I did not wish Ram Narayon to recast my sentences—most assuredly not. I only requested him to correct grammatical blunders, if any. You know that a man’s style is the reflection of his mind, and I am afraid there is but little congenality between our friend and my poor-self. However, I shall adopt some of his corrections.

If you should speak of the drama to your friends, when you meet them to-day, pray, don't say a word about Ram Narayon. I shan’t have him. He has made my poor girls talk d-d cold prose.

I am aware, my dear fellow, that there will, in all likelihood, be something of a foreign air about my Drama; but if the language be not ungrammatical, if the thoughts be just and glowing, the plot interesting, the characters well-maintained, what care you if there be a foreign air about the thing? Do you dislike Moore's poetry because it is fall of Orientalism? Byron's poetry for its Asiatic air, Carlyle's prose for its Germanism? Besides, remember that I am writing for that portion of my countrymen who think as I think, whose minds have been more or less imbued with Western ideas and modes of thinking and that it is my intention to throw off the letters forged for us by servile admiration of everything Sanskrit.

Do not let me frighten you by my audacity. I have been showing the Second Act, already complete, to several persons totally ignorant of English, and I do assure you, upon my word, that they have spoken of it in terms so high that, at times, I feel disposed to question their sincerity; and yet I have no reason to believe that those men would flatter me.

In matters literary, old boy, I am too proud to stand before the world, in borrowed clothes. I may borrow a neck-tie, or even a waist-coat, but not the whole suit.

Don't let thy soul be perturbed, old cock, for I promise you a play that will astonish the old [rascals] in the shape of Pandits. When you see Joteendra and the Rajas, puff away—there’s nothing like that to raise the price of an article in the market, I have no objection to allow a few alterations and so forth, but recast all my sentences—the Devil I would sooner barn the thing.

Yours, as usual,
M. S. Dutt.

“I am of opinion that Sermistha is the best drama we have in our language;...it is at once classical, chaste and full of genuine poetry!”—‘

...the drama is a complete success, abounding as it does with ideas and similies that are scarcely to be found in any Bengalee book I have come across.—ঐ।

The work—of which the following pages contain a translation—is the the first attempt in the Bengali language to produce a classical and regular Drama. The story of Sermista will be found in the First Book of the Mahabharata—almost immediately after that of Sakuntala—rendered so famous by the splendid genius of Kalidasa.

Sermista is to be acted at the elegant private Theatre attached to the Belgatchia Villa of the Rajas of Paikpara. Should the Drama ever again flourish in India, posterity will not forget these noble gentlemen—the earliest friends of our rising national Theatre.

When Sharmista was acted at Belgachia the impression it created was simply indescribable. Even the least romantic spectator was charmed by the character of Sharmista and shed tears with her. As for my own feelings, they were “things to dream of not to tell.” Poor old Ramchandra,[৩] was half mad and grasped any hand, “Why my dear Madhu, my dear Madha, this does you great credit indeed! Oh it is beautifal.”—‘জীবন-চরিত’ পৃ.

“Sermista” has turned out to be a most delightful girl, if I am to believe those who have already inspected her. Jatindra says it is the best drama in the language, “chaste, classical and full of genuine poetry!” The Chota Raja writes in raptures about it and swears the “Drama is a complete success!” But I dare say, you have heard their opinions before this. There is to be an English translation.

I hope to send you copies, English and Bengali, when ready, and you shall have an opportunity of judging for yourself. —‘

My dear Sir, Accept my best thanks for your kind presence it is a gem truly worthy of the talented donor. I will preserve it carefully as an invaluable contribution to the rising literature of our country, and I doubt not but Sermistha will take the first place among the dramas in the vernaculars.

I am glad to know that an English version of “Sermistha” is in the press. From what I have seen of the “Ratnavali” and considering that in the present instance the author is himself the trauslator, I am sanguine in my expectation.

The actors are doing marvellously well, they have already got by heart, the greater portion of the Book, and I fully believe, they will be able to do justice to the conceptions of the Poet.

I shewed the first portion of your English version Sermistha to my friend, the Chota Raja and he liked it exceedingly; for my own part I verily believe, that if it is finished in the style in which it is begun, (and I doubt not but it will be so), your present translation will even surpass that of Ratnavali.

I have nearly finished the translation of Sharmista. If I am to believe all those that have already seen it—and among them are the Rajas and Tagore—it will materially add to the little reputation Ratnavali has given me Every one says it is superior to that book; as for the Bengali original, the only fault found with it, is that the language is a little too high for such audiences as we may expect now to patronise it. This, I need scarcely tell you, is nothing, for if the book is destined to occupy a permanent place in the literature of the country, it will not be condemned on this bead, twenty years hence, for everyone is learning Bengali. To tell you the candid truth, I never thought I was capable of doing so much all at once. This Sharmista has very nearly put me at the head of all Bengali writers. People talk of its poetry with rapture. But you must judge for yourself.

For the present I shall speak of Sarmista—the production of your friend, Michael M. S. Dutt, Esqr. You know all about it, and that it is going to be noted on the boards of our Belgatchia Villa. I shall first of all give you the names of the Dramatis Personae, and as I am going to send you the book through to-day's post, you will be able to know more from it than what one, placed at such a distance from the seat of action, can possibly know. You will see, from what I am going to show you, some new faces in our Corps, though few there are that you do not know. Amongst the latter is our Heroine. He or she, as you might choose to call, is a real acquisition. To a melodious female voice he combines one of the sweetest tones that it has ever been my lot to hear, and, to crown all, he is daily showing a capacity for the stage that has not only satisfied the most sceptic but surprised every one of us, by his powers, though not yet fully developed, for histrionic representations. Now,

TO THE DRAMATIS PERSONÆ

King Yayati ... ... ... Preonath Dutt.
Madhobya ... Bidhusaka ... Kesab Chundra Ganguly
Montri ... Minister ... Nabin Chundra Mukerjee
Sukracharjya ... Rishi ... Deno Nath Ghose.
Kopil ... His disciple ... Sarat Chander Ghose
Bokasur ... General ... Issur Chander Singh.
Daitya ... An Officer ... Tara Chand Guho.
1st Citizen ... Huris Chundra Mookherjee.
2nd do ... Russick Lal Law.
3rd do ... Brojo Dullal Dutt.
Courtiers ... Jotindra Mohan Tagore. Preonath Sett and Rajendra Lal Mitter.
Chopdars ... Dwarkanath Mullick & Mohesh Chunder Chunder.
Durwan ... Jodu Nath Ghose (my brother-in-law).
Debjani ... Hem Chunder Mookerjee (our Shagarika)
Sharmista ... Kriatodhon Banerjee (a new-comer).
Purnika ... Kally Das Sandal (formerly our dancing girl).
Dabika ... Aghor Chander Dhagria (our Susongota)
Notee ... Chuni Lal Bose (as before).
Maidservant ... Kally Prasanna Mookerjee.
Dancing-girls ... The same as before, plus Bunkim Chunder Mukerjee.

Here you have as complete a list of the characters as I could give you, and I believe none can give you better the names of the characters than the manager of the theatre. Now as to other particulars, the rehearsals are going on twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays respectively. Almost everybody is prepared and we can get up the play at ten days notice, but our Raja's father is unfortunately dead, and that will delay us. My brother, moreover, is now at Kandi. He is gone there a second time this year, but he is likely to return soon, and we expect to appear before the publie in all April. No less than eight scenes have to be newly painted, most of them are already finished, and beautiful and magnificent they are without doubt.

I have not spoken anything about the drama, and I shall not do it. No one knows what effect such a thing as the 'Sharmista' will have on the Stage. It is still a matter of doubt whether it will be as popular as Ratnabali. I will give no opinion concerning it unless it has passed the ordeal of public criticism. * * *

With my sincere and hearty good wishes to yourself.

I remain, yours ever sincerely
ISSUR CHUNDER SINGH.

How is Sermists going on? When does it come out? The more I read the more I am enamoured of her.—‘মধু-স্মৃতি,’ পৃ.

None of your works has been unread by me; “Sormista” is exactly after the pare classical model, is in many places full of sterling poetry, and displays considerable knowledge of human nature I shall never forget the sweet resigning spirit of the gentle Sermista, the tender interview between her and the king. the pathetic meeting between Devajani and her father and the mean tiresome jokes of the clown.

...In addition to all this, I have been finishing my English Bermists and the New play, which I trust will distanos its predecessor.

I am glad you like Sarmista. I dare say you will also like the English. Pray, tell your cousin at the Asiatic to send your name for a copy to the Publisher. I have nothing to do with the sale of the book for its proceeds will be paid to the Rajahs in liquidation of the money they have kindly advanced me.

You must wait for some time yet for the New Play. All that I can tell you is that there are few prettier plots in any Drama that you have read I invented it one blessed Sunday. Tagore and the Rajahs exclaimed “Beautiful.” I only hope I have done justice to it. This morning I am going to send Act No. IV to Tagore. I wish I could ran up to spend some little time with you, but at present that is out of the question. Upon my soul, you are damnably mistaken if you think that I like Calcutta. I would be happier I think, even in the Soonderbuns. I lead a quiet life and seldom or never go out anywhere.—‘মধু-স্মৃতি,’ পৃ.

I think the first public performance of Sermistha is to take place this Saturday—we expect it will come off gloriously.—‘

The representation of the drama of Sermistha has come off gloriously! Night before last was the sixth of last night of its performances and the Lieut. Governor and several other respectable gentlemen Native and European were present on the occasion. You must have read the very handsome notices in the papers, so I will not write to trouble you with details.—‘মধু-স্মৃতি,’ পৃ.

The Chota Raja saw me this morning and I am glad to tell you, he has agreed to pay in advance the printing charges of the two farces and a portion of the amount due from him on account of the English Sermistha.—‘মধু-স্মৃতি,’ ১২৮।

...but you must excuse me, my dear sir, if I still betray a greater leaning towards our favourite দৈত্যরাজবালা. It may be that a longer and more intimate acquaintances with her has made me partial to her merits, but this is simply a matter of opinion, and I hope you will not take my remarks amiss.—‘জীবন-চরিত,’ পৃ.

How are you getting on with “Sharmista"—my Garrick? Have you seen “Padmavati"? Will it do as Sharmista's sucessor?—‘জীবন-চরিত,’ পৃ.
