Babu Vihari Lala Mitra has given freely of his wealth to the succour of the distressed, the suffering and the needy, irrespective of nationality and creed, but his charities have never been accompanied by noise and show. In fact, modesty and simplicity have always been his predominant characteristics. Of his numerous charities may be mentioned the donation of Rs, 10,000 each to the Sambhu Nath Puntit Hospital at Bhowanipore and the Bengal Branch of Her Excellency Lady Minto's Indian Nursing Assocaciation. The Bengal Provincial Kangra Valley Earthquake Relief Fund, which was started in 1905, and the Italian Earthquake Fund opened recently, benefited by his contributions. In addition, the Hitakari Sabha at Baranagar, the Sobhabazar Benevolent Soeiety, the District Charitable Society, the Albert Victor Leper Asylum, and various other charitable societies have received his help from time to time. In spite of the spread of liberal education in recent years, it is still said to the disparagement of the wealthy classes of our community that pleasure and frivolity constitute the chief elements of their existence.
