( lxix.) grandeur, yet this noble feeling has found a congenial home. In their scions of the present day it has become a sort of instinct, which they have inherited from their fathers, generation after generation. The proud sons of these families, as a rule, disdain to advertise themselves or to seek a reward for good deeds, which they perform because they are good. Yet they are the natural leaders of the people, with a real stake in the country, and at this time of storm and stress, they are the best men for bringing back that calm and rest which the country now sorely needs. They are the true notables whose voice will be respected as that of a friend, and who therefore are capable of explaining to be people the intentions of the Government, and to the Government the wants and aspirations of the people. As their modesty, or eall it pride if you like, will not allow them to go in quest of name or fame, it will be well if Government seeks them out.
