ঘোষসাহেবের পুস্তকের কোন স্থানে উক্ত গ্রন্থের উল্লেখ দেখি নাই মধুনিক বাঙ্গালী লেখকগণের প্রতি ঘোষসাহেব যেরূপ সমালোচনা করিয়াছেন, বেভী র গ্রন্থের কথা স্মরণ হইলে, বোধ হয়, তিনি ততটা করিতে সাহসী হইতেন না। ঐ সমস্ত ধঙ্গিালী লেখক আপনাদিগের প্রবন্ধ সম্বন্ধে বেভারিজের গ্রন্থ হইতে অনেক পরিমাণে সাহায্য পাইয়াছেন, তাহা তাহারা স্থানে স্থানে প্রকাশও করিয়াছেন। যাহা হউক, র্তাহার স্টিফেনের মত সম্বন্ধে বেভারিজ যেরূপ মন্তব্য প্রকাশ করিয়াছেন, আমরা এ স্থলে তাহা উদ্ধৃত করিয়া দেখাইতেছি। বেভারিজ স্টিফেনের গ্রন্থের উত্তর দেওয়ার জন্য প্রথমে তাহার ঐ গ্রন্থের প্রবন্ধ প্রকাশ করিয়াছিলেন। পরে তিনি উক্ত প্রবন্ধগুলিকে গ্রন্থাকারে প্রকাশ করিয়া তাহার নাম দিয়াছেন,—“The Trial of Maharaja Nandkumar, a Narrative of a Judicial murder.” for Too निञ्ज গ্রন্থের স্থানে স্থানে বেভারিজের পূর্বলিখিত প্রবন্ধের সমালোচনা করায়, বেভারিজ স্টিফেনের সমালোচনার উত্তরের জন্যই এই গ্রন্থ লিখিয়াছেন। এক্ষণে আমরা বেভারিজের কথা উদ্ধৃত করিয়া ঘোষসাহেবকে ও পাঠকগণকে দেখাইতেছি যে, স্টিফেনের মন্তব্য চূড়ান্ত বলিয়া গৃহীত হয় নাই, এবং বার্ক ও মিলের বর্ণনা আজিও অনেকের মনে জাগবৃক আছে। স্টিফেন সম্বন্ধে বেভারিজ বলিতেছেন ঃ—
“My discouragement, however, was removed when I found that Sir J. Stephen had evidently taken up the subject hastily, and had written his book in a hurry. I think the first ray of hope came from the discovery that he was wrong about the date of the capture of Rhotas and then I found that he did not quote the Provision of Bolaqui's will about Padma Mohan correctly, or notice the expression on the jewels-bond that the jewels were deposited to be sold.
Further researches in Calcutta Public Library, and in the Foreign Office, &c. convinced me that Sir J. Stephen’s work was thoroughly unreliable, and that we might adopt to himself what he has wrongly and flippantly said about James Mill (II, 149) and say that his trenchant style and excathedra air produce an impression of accuracy and labour which a study of original authorities does not by any means confirm.”
